copy & paste don't work

I can't seem to move blocks of text from one document to another document in Word. I can move stuff within a document (I use the mouse to define the text, click the Copy icon, then click the Paste icon to put the text somewhere else), but when I try doing this from one document to another, the Copy and Paste icons aren't highlighted and can't be used. I tried using copy & paste from the File menu, and that didn't work either. Everything I read indicates I should be able to move stuff from one document to another. I used to do this all the time in my old Works Word Processor program. Does Word require that I do things differently?

Have you highlighted the text you want to Copy/Paste?

As the other respondant said, highlight the text you want to copy. Then under Edit choose copy. This will stay in memory until you copy something else ot shut down the system. Then go to where you want the text to be copied and click once there where there is a blinking cursor. Then under edit select paste.

Thanks for your suggestion, but it doesn't work for me. Here's what happens: I highlight the text and choose copy from the Edit menu. But then when I go to another document and go back to Edit, the paste command is not highlighted and I can't choose it to make the text reappear in the new spot. So now what can I do? I really am hoping for an answer. Thanks.

I have never seen this, but, if another window is open you have to choose paste from that window. In other words, let's say I open a word document. I have to choose copy from that smaller windows inside word. Then when I paste somewhere else I still have to use the copy from the window I have open. Maybe you are doing this but wanted to be sure. Can you open a document and select some text. Then choose copy and while still in the same document paste it there somewhere?

Try using CTRL C to copy and use CTRL V to paste in into the other app. In some applications the copy command only seems to make the text available within that app. CTRL should make it available in all apps.

First things first:
Highlight the text you want to copy.
Right click on it.
Click on "Copy"
Then go to the "Clipboard" viewer to check if it
went there as it's supposed to do.
Click "Start", Programs Accessories, System Tools, then
"Clipboard Viewer".
If it ain't there then that could be the reason.
I don't know what to tell you after that.
If it is, then going to whatever document you
open should "paste" it there if you follow the other's suggestions.
