Yes, your modem could be using COM 1. To check this, right click My Computer on your desktop and then click Properties. Then select the tab labeled Device Manager. Next, click the (+) plus signe next to Modem, then double click on the name of your modem. Then click the tab labeled Modem and you will see which COM port is being used by your modem.
