Cannot boot Inspiron 620 with Radeon HD 7750

Hi,

(tl;dr - bolded for quick reference)

I am looking to upgrade my video card on my Inspiron 620 (MT) and could really use some help.  I bought a PowerColor Radeon HD 7750 (as many on this and other forums have recommended it to other 620 users with the same question).  The problem is, it would not boot up once installed.  The power would go on, but it would never finish booting up.  If I removed the 7750, it would boot up normally, so I don't think it's the motherboard.

I thought it might be the PSU, so I replaced the stock 300W with a Corsair CX430, but still no luck.  I updated the BIOS to A10.  No dice.  The 7750 is PCI-e 3.0 and the Inspiron 620 is PCI-e 2.0 (I believe).  I thought PCI-e was supposed to be reverse compatible, so I didn't think it would be a problem.  I don't know what the issue was, but I ended up returning the 7750.

Maybe it was a bad card?  But others have had the same issue as me -- same video card, same model 620:

http://computerhelpforum.org/forum/index.php/topic/1600-i-need-help-with-my-radeon-hd-7750/

The Dell website itself sells the 7750 and under compatibility lists the 620 as approved:

<ADMIN NOTE: Broken link has been removed from this post by Dell>

Someone in these forums, in a different post says something interesting.  They mention the H61 chipset not supporting AHCI or 6Gb/s Sata.  I have no idea if that could be the problem.  I don't even know what that means really.

http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/desktop/f/3514/p/19454916/20132530.aspx#20132530

Others have mentioned that the BIOS has no option to switch to PCI-e display, although others say it should be automatic (which is why it does not have the option).

I saw a lot of forum posts here and other places where people suggest the 7750 as the best graphics card for the 620, but I don't think I've found anyone who reported that they ACTUALLY have the 7750 running with a 620 itself.  Just lots of suggestions that it "should" work.

Does any Inspiron 620 owner actually have a 7750 running in their computer and if so, how did you get it to work?  I have scoured the internet and come up empty.  Or does any Inspiron 620 user out there have ANY PCI-e 3.0 x 16 video card working and if so, which one do you have?

Otherwise, maybe it's some isolated issue with just the 7750 and 620?  I've read that other Inspiron users (i.e. 530's) can use the 7750.  I'm not sure if there's any difference in PCI-e slots, BIOS or chipset that might be the culprit.

I'm also looking to see if anyone has suggestions for the best PCI-e 2.0/2.1 video card available on the market today as that may be my fallback option.

Maybe my card was bad and I should just get another 7750 to try.  Any thoughts, suggestions or advice would be most helpful.  Thanks so much!

I have no issues with a Sapphire 100357LP Radeon HD 7750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 PCI Express 3.0 in my 620. No issues with 6670.  Many Nvidia models do not post especially 220 240 etc.

Could be that the card you have is not going all the way into the slot.

The sapphire card is universal.  Comes with Short and Tall brackets and therefore works fine in 620S or 620MT.

@SpeedStep - This is exciting news!  I really wanted a 7750!  :)

I just returned the PowerColor 7750 yesterday (broken or not - it doesn't work for me).  I will look for a Sapphire one instead.

I did have two questions though.  1) Do you think it matters that the video poster's computer is a "620s"?  I don't have a 620s.  I have a 620 (Mini Tower).  Or are they basically the same?  and 2) He has a Core i5, while mine is an older Core i3.  Would that make a difference or do you think I could still run a Sapphire Radeon 7750?

Thanks for all your help!

Personally I would send the powercolor card back and get my money back.

The Sapphire card has worked on EVERY Dell I have Ever installed it on without issue.

If your system has UEFI bios which I dont think it has then you would need to set Legacy CSM boot mode to get cards that are not in the windows 8 certificate store.

Here is another user with this EXACT card and it works fine.

Great!

But just to confirm, you say it's universal, but I wanted to make sure... you don't think there'd be any issue with the CPU Core i5 vs. i3?  H61 Chipset?

You've been very helpful.  Thanks again!

@Osprey4 - Thank you!

@SpeedStep - Hi, thanks for the response.  That's great to hear!

I tried inserting the GPU at least a half dozen times, each trying to push it in as hard as I can without causing damage to the card.  Each time it locks into place (with the little bracket holder thing closing fully) and seems to be as far in as it can go.  So I don't think it's that.

Another thought though, since your 620 works with a Sapphire 7750 is that maybe there's a problem with the PowerColor version of the 7750 that I had.  In my research, a guy said he had the same problem with his 620 not being able to boot up after also installing a PowerColor 7750.  Another person said they also had the same problem in a different forum post, but didn't specify the brand.

I did end up getting an email response from PowerColor asking me to test the card on a Windows 8 computer and wanting me to upgrade the firmware on the video card to UEFI compatible (even though I'm running on Windows 7).  This sounded odd to me.  I did find a forum post somewhere about a third person with the same problem who WAS able to fix it, doing just that -- installing the card in a different Windows 8 computer and upgrading the firmware to the UEFI version, but that person claimed to be running Windows 8, so I disregarded it.

Do you think maybe PowerColor's 7750 firmware is different and that's why my Inspiron 62 won't work with it?  Is that possible?  PowerColor sells a normal version of the 7750 (which I bought) and a "UEFI ready" version.  When I was looking for a 7750, I don't recall other brands (besides PowerColor) selling "UEFI ready" versions.  Maybe it's just a PowerColor issue?

Thanks for the responses so far!

No such issues with any CPU or Chipset.

I am also having trouble with my hd 7750, except that it is the HIS brand. Every time I place the gpu in my 620s (slim tower) and try to turn on my computer, the monitor says there is no connection and my keyboard doesn't turn on. The fans in the gpu and the rest of my computer turn on, so I am suspecting that either

1. My psu is not sufficient. I have the stock psu for the 620s, which I think is 300w.

2. My card is faulty.

3. I am doing something else wrong.

This user is not having issues with the SAPPHIRE 100357LP Radeon HD 7750 1GB 128-bit GDDR5 card. His system is a 620S.

I have a credit at Newegg and the Sapphire 7750 is out of stock.

Do you think I would have a problem with one of these brands (see below - Asus, XFX, Diamond)?  Have you heard of successes with any of these 7750's and 620's before (similar to the Sapphire ones)?  Or do you think it safer to just wait for the Sapphire since we know they should be compatible?

XFX 7750 - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150612

Diamond 7750 M- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814103234

Also, since we determined that the PCI-e 3.0x16 is not the problem, do you think I could use a 7770 on my 620?  I believe I read they require a PSU of 400-500w or 500-600w for CrossFire (mine is 430w Corsair - I just upgraded it).  I'm thinking I'm ok since the 7750 uses ~55w and some people run it ok on the 300w stock PSU for the 620 and the 7770 uses ~80w and on a good quality 430w, I think it should work fine, right?  Any experience with the 7770 on the 620's?

Thanks for your help and advice!

7770 REQUIRES 650W POWER SUPPLY.

12 INCH LONG CARDS WILL NOT EVER FIT.

7770 DOES NOT COME IN LOW PROFILE

NONE OF THE OTHER CARDS LIKELY FIT WELL IF AT ALL

Hi SpeedStep,

Thanks for the info, but are we both talking about the same GPU - Radeon 7770?

I'm just going by the listing on the Newegg pages (as posted above), but they seem to be different than what you described.

XFX 7770http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814150666

Interface:  PCI Express 3.0 x16

System Requirements:  Minimum 450 watt Power Supply

Card Dimensions:  6.6" x 4.4" x 1.5"

MSi 7770http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127687

Interface:  PCI Express 3.0 x16

System Requirements:  not listed, but on AMD website listed as 500w PSU (600w required for 2 75w 6 pin PCIe connectors for CrossFire) -  http://www.amd.com/us/products/desktop/graphics/7000/7770/pages/radeon-7770.aspx#3

Card Dimensions:  7.6" x 4.37" x 1.5"

ASUS 7770http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814121663

Interface:  PCI Express 3.0 x16

System Requirements:  not listed

Card Dimensions:  7.5" x 5.3" x 1.5"

Will any of these cards work for me (inspiron 620 w/ 430w Corsair PSU)?  I've read on some forum posts that 430w PSU is sufficient for 7770, but I don't know if these specific cards would work in a 620.  But they don't seem to be over 12" or require 650w.  Is there a different version of the 7770?  These are the GHz edition if that means anything.  If not, I can always stick to the 7750, but for a little more $$$ these seem to be pretty good cards if compatible at all.  Thanks again.

real 650w works

fake 430w = burn up poof everything dead forever.

You guess wrong you lose game over.

7770 requires GOOD EPS12V 2.92 power supply.

7750 works fine with stock Dell power supply.

End of recommendations.
