Blank taskbar icons accompanied by sluggish system
Hi folks -
We've got an XPS that's experiencing sluggishness to the point where the system appears frozen (after a minute or so it'll semi-recover). One symptom that might give a clue is lacking taskbar icons (just some). And then when the rest do finally appear sometimes they are the blank white Windows document icon.
Any ideas?
I can't tell if this is an impending hardware failure or a Windows thing. I've msconfig'd and disabled some startup stuff. I'm currently in safe mode writing this.

Thx for the feedback folks -- Looks like it's a slowly dying secondary hard drive.
I suppose the "semaphores" timing out error along with the symptoms is good enough proof of that.
And that leads to the next question (best practices for cleanup of dead drive):

Hi - thanks for that! I did actually run an "sfc /scannow" before but it didn't turn up anything.
I did just run it again just for kicks and still "Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations."
Some other things I did: ccleaner for registry clean-up, Windows "error-checking" (disk scan) for various hard-drives.
At one point I was getting some semaphore errors in a program and have since reinstalled it into a different location (on a separate drive).
Things are intermittent at the moment. On boot, same symptoms - but now as I type this things seem to have stabilized.
