After installing new hard drive?

Hi,

Thanks for any help.  I purchased a new hard drive from dell and after I install it says No boot device available.   Not sure what steps I need to do to get the operating system running.  My PC is xps 410 and I'm running windows xp home edition.

Hi JND1993, You need to put your reinstall disc in your system, then restart your system, pressing F12 when you see the Dell splash screen. Then tab down to your dvd/cd drive, and press enter to boot off the disc to load your software. Also what you can do before that is to do into your BIOS at startup and make sure your new drive is seen by you BIOS. Here is an journal on how to get your XP back on, if it says vista, click to change OS.

Hi,

Thanks so much for your quick reply and the information you provided for me.  I have another question though and that would be I have a drivers and utilities disc that says for upgrading your dell to windows xp home edition this contains the drivers and utilities to prepare your computer to upgrade to windows xp home edition. The date this was put out though is 2001 and I bought this computer around 2006 or 7  so would the disc be Ok to use?   I have a second disc that is also from 2001 that says drivers and utilities resourced for reinstalling device drivers etc.  This one makes no mention of upgrading to windows xp.   Just want to make sure I have the right disc to contiune.

Thanks again,

Jill

Hi,

This will be my primary harddrive.  My old one crashed and I lost everything so I ordered a new one yesterday.  I was able to get windows back yesterday by going to dell reformat or restore screen by hitting F11 and control while the computer was reloading and its running Ok but I didn't load any programs back in yet so if I dont that might cause it to crash again.   When I ordered the new one I thought I would just have to install it "that part was easy" but then of course I got the no boot available when I started it so that is why I don't know what to do from here.

No boot device available usually shows when it can't find a bootable device.

Did you just add the new Harddrive as a secondary or is it a replacement for your Primary? If it's a replacement for your primary,  windows  might not be installed yet.

Also Check in the BIOS if it's detected do you'll know if it's properly installed.

Do you have a disc that just says Operating System?

Thanks again.  Yes, I found a disc that says operating systems 2007.

That's great. If your using the same cables you used for your older Hard Drive, then your computer should detect the new Hard Drive properly. All you need now is to insert your Operating System CD that came with your computer and restart the computer.

Awryt! Now all you need to do is insert that disc, restart the computer, and after the installation you can proceed with installing the Resource CD for the drivers and you're good to go.

I am writing this for Jill (this is her Sister, she can't get online).  She followed your directions.  She put the new hard drive in, it formatted, Windows came up ... but, there was no Internet Explorer (so she put the old hard drive back in, and restored it, F11).   She called Verizon (her high speed internet company) and they are telling her she HAS an internet connection, just no LAN Drivers?!?!?  They apparently tested it.    How does she go about getting LAN Drivers installed???  Again, she cannot get online. Thank you for any/all help!

You'll need a driver and utilities Cd, or a Resource CD. Something that looks like this. http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/51ErNE0co3L._SL500_AA280_.jpg

install the disc and then extract the one under "Network (NIC) Drivers" The one with the check is the right one to install.

This doesn't seem to be working out very well as now I cant find the right dices for the drivers and even the operating systems I installed doesn't look the same as what I get when I use the re-store from Dell.com for my PC ..  I don't get the blue dell bar when I turn on the PC with the new hard drive in so I  was wondering if it is at all possible to download the re-store from dell.com put it on an external hard drive and them use that  to restore my system when I put the new hard drive back in?  I cant get online with the new hard drive so that is why I would want to download it and put it on the external and then bring it back in that way.
