1280x1024 recommended resolution - wrong aspect ratio!

Dells 'recommended' resolution of 1280x1024 is distorting everything on the screen (does Dell recommend taking LSD as well?)!

To top things off, the next ratio that keeps to the aspect ration is either 1152x864 or 1600x1200!
1280x960 would be nice, but thoughtfully the graphics card in this new Dell doesn't support it.

Anyone know of a fix for this?

How can I identify a wrong aspect ratio?
I work in a Ultrasharp 1704 with 1280X1024 and looks nice... I think...

If you make something that 'should' be round onscreen (say a circle shape in photoshop) & it isn't (compare it with a CD or something), then your aspect ratio is off - and graphics that you create may look distorted on 4:3 ratio screens.

I have Windows 2000 on Precision 450. Recently bought a Dell FLW2005 wide flat screen monitor
but the image is  s  t  r  e  t  c  h  e  d   horizontally because the video adapter that is compatible with 2000 is limited to 1280 x 1024, when it should be 1680 x 1050. I have not found a patch or other fix, but intend to download the ATI Fire GL V3100 driver and see what happens.

I am having a similiar problem. I just got this computer this week, and I love it except for the aspect problem.   At a resolution of 1280x1024, the 5:4 ratio is lovely and it looks like it's supposed to.

But if I want to work at a lower resolution such as my prefered 1024x768 (which is the factory setting), it is 4:3 and all the images are stretched vertically. Circles become ovals and photos are distorted.

I don't mind having the 4:3 ratio if it would just do the letterboxing or whatever it should do, but it just fills the whole screen and thus distorts it. There is no letterboxing. Anyone know how I can make it do that?

I even tried adjusting the monitor manually, but I don't seem to have the right controls.

If anyone has any ideas how to fix this, I would be so grateful

you did not mention the type of monitor, but i have flat panel wide screens with my dells running all of them in 1280 x 720 (60 hz) for excellent quality. i don't recall offhand if this was standard or a custom resolution i created. you could also try a custom resolution of 1360x768 at 60 also.

Kerriritter,  How do I set up a custom resolution?  That sounds like it might be the solution I need.

I have a Dell 19" flat screen monitor.  (Dell E196FP color monitor).

sure, right click anywhere on your desktop and choose "properties" from the menu. this takes you to your display settings page. choose the last option on the top tabs "settings" and here you can use the slider bar to change your screen resolution. depending on your monitor (and graphics card) you can make several adjustments here then click apply to preview them. if you don't like one, you have 15 seconds to say "no" dont use these settings and try again.

your graphic card may have also come with similar control panel software to make these same types of changes.

good luck to you.

bayougal, i beg your pardon. i see now you have a 19 inch flat panel regular not wide screen. those resolutions i mentioned earlier were for wide screen.

on these regular FP monitors i run a standard resolution, nothing custom, of 1024 x 768. they also work well with 1152 x 864. again, depending on your graphics card and your "vision", 1280 x 960 is also good though to me the text is more difficult to read.

just use your settings area in the display properties to change the resolution, test it, try again, etc. until you find the resolution that works for you.

As best I can tell, the Windows 2000 is not compatible with the driver for the wide flat screen I bought. I assume this because a similar computer I have (Precision 380 running XP) has the same model Dell flatscreen monitor, with no aspect ration problem. I downloaded the ATI Fire GL V3100 video driver that my 380 uses, but it would not load on the computer with Windows 2000. Does anyone know how to get around this? Is there a patch for the 2000 that enables it to interface with more video drivers? I already have Service Pack 4 so that is no help.

Did you ever find a solution to this? (letterbox on the display to preserve corret aspect ratio). I have am M70 laptop with the wider screen. the 1280 x 1024 works on the docking station, and the wider aspect rations work fine when I am undocked. My problem is when connected to a projector, the ratio forced by it makes my display on the laptop elongated like yours. I have tried to set up a profile for when I am in this situation, but cannot seem to figure out how.

Thanks,

Mark
