OME for IT service provider?
Hi there
We are an IT service provider and have around 30 Dell servers out at various client locations that we need to monitor the hardware on. Is OME a suitable tool for this? If so, I am trying to find out if the traffic between our server that has OME on it at a central office and each of the client sites would be secure? If so, what security mechanism does it use? Thanks for any help you can provide for us on this.
Best regards,
Warren

Hi Warren,
We use SSL. Some folks use OME in this configuration you mention. The user guide will discuss what ports you need to open. It depends on the protocol you use to discover and monitor. The speed of the WAN connection may be important. I expect for monitoring over a WAN you will be ok. We would not support patch or OMSA deploy over WAN.
I'd suggest a small pilot with one of your clients so you can evaluate the performance.

Rob

Hi Rob,
Thanks for your reply. So to confirm my understanding of what you are saying - we would be able to set up a single OME server at our office and then configure it to monitor our customers servers over an SSL-based connection via the Internet? Is my understanding correct then that any SNMP traffic would then be secured as it is going over the SSL connection?
Correct, we are only interested in using it for proactive monitoring of the server hardware, not OMSA deployment or patching so we should be good on that side of things.
Last question - does Dell provide any kind of technical support for OME? If so, where would I find out about those options?
Thanks again, and happy 2013!

Warren,
The connection between the OME Console (running in IE) and the OME server is SSL/HTTPS. But for any SNMP alerts that come in from the managed systems, it's just SNMP.
You will need to be sure you can ping your customers servers from the central OME server (DNS name resolution ...and reverse name reso as well).
We do have support at 800-945-3355 if you need to open a ticket on a specific issue.
Good luck and keep us posted.

Thanks for the email but to answer the original question, then the answer would be no, the traffic between the central OME server and the individual client sites would not be secure.
Also, that support number is the generic Pro Support help line. Any help on where to go once I've dialed the number?

ah, no idea on where to go...I just know the number :-) If you can get to support for PowerEdger Servers, I would think they can use your service tag and provide you support. Let me know if you can't find it.
Well you can use different protocols. For SNMP, we only do 'gets'. If you want more secure communication for discover and inventory, you can use WMI (which is authenticated) or WSMan, which would be encrypted.
Thanks,
Rob
