Upgrading CPU on Dell R710 - Compatibility Query
Hello Dell Community,
I hope you're all doing well. I am currently in the process of upgrading the CPUs on my Dell R710 server, and I have a couple of questions regarding compatibility and BIOS versions.
Here's the situation:
- Current Setup: Dell R710 with BIOS version 6.4.0, running Intel Xeon X5650 CPUs.
- Planned Upgrade: I'm considering upgrading to Intel Xeon X5690 CPUs for better performance.
My main concern is whether the current BIOS version (6.4.0) is compatible with the Intel Xeon X5690 CPUs. I have checked the Dell support page and found that BIOS version 6.6.0 is available, but I'm uncertain if this update would ensure compatibility with the X5690 CPUs and would prefer not to update the BIOS unless absolutely needed as I am unable to backup the server at this time in case something goes wrong.
Unfortunately, I couldn't locate a service tag on my server to contact support directly, so I am reaching out to this wonderful community for advice. I have also read about the need to ensure proper thermal paste application and being cautious about bending CPU pins during the upgrade process.
I would greatly appreciate any insights, experiences, or recommendations from those who have gone through a similar upgrade process or are familiar with Dell R710 compatibility matters. Any advice on how to proceed and whether the BIOS update is necessary would be highly valuable.
Thank you in advance for your assistance! Your insights will greatly aid me in making informed decisions and ensuring a smooth upgrade process.
Best regards,
AC
