DPA unable to determine Commvault version.

Hello,

I am evaluating the suitability of EMC's DPA for the monitoring / reporting of our Commvault Simpana v11 environment. I have been able to install an evaluation licensed version of DPA (6.2.2) on a single RHEL 6 server. A DPA agent for Windows also has been installed on the Commvault commcell server.  I can successfully access The DPA web interface and have created credentials for accessing Commvault. No problem discovering this host. However, when I try to discover "Commvault" I receive the following error:

Performing tests for Commvault Simpana:

    Test failed! Error :

[collector "obscured for confidentiality" on port 3741 returned an error processing command: Unable to determine CommVault version]

Any suggestions or guidance to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks,

Colin Lucas

If you haven't done so, have a look at the DPA Installation and Administration Guide.  In the Preparing to install DPA chapter, in the Communication settings in DPA section, there is a list of ports and protocols.  Below the diagram, it indicates "DPA Agent to DPA Application Server communications is on 9002 and 3741 TCP".  You will need to modify the firewall rules on the DPA agent (Commvault Cell Server) to allow two-way communication on these ports.  Depending on the configuration on your RedHat host, you might have to modify its firewall, too, if it's not allowing those TCP ports.  You can test this by using a tool such as nmap on the RedHat server to list the ports it can communicate to the CommVault server on.  Once that's done, you should be able to discover CommVault.

Even during the eval period, EMC Support should be able to help diagnose any issues that arise.  Don't hesitate to open a support case.

Let us know if that helps!

Thanks for your response Karl.  I will follow-up on your suggestions to ensure nothing is blocking ports.

Colin, were you successful in resolving this issue?  I'm facing the same thing, attempting to hit a CV11 environment from within DPA 6.2.3.   Disappointing response from EMC's support team: "Nope, we don't support CV11, not sure if we ever will."    (my summary, not theirs.)

Unfortunately, I was not able to resolve the issue so I changed tack and now use Rocket Software's Servergraph Professional  product that  can query Commvault version 11 and produces all the results I need. Furthermore the reporting can be customized.
