Upgrade from SAN-OS to NX-OS

Currently I have MDS9509s at two sites, and are all running SAN-OS 3.3(2) and I want to upgrade them to the currently supported NX-OS version which is 4.1(1b). I am also running RecoverPoint using the SANTap splitter on the SSM line card and that is running SSI 3.3(2s). Now according to the “Cisco MDS 9000 NX-OS Release 4.1(x) and SAN-OS 3.3(x) Software Upgrade and Downgrade Guide” on page 22, I can upgrade directly from 3.3(2) to 4.1(1b). But according to the “Cisco MDS 9000 Family Storage Services Interface Image Installation and Upgrade Guide” I need to be running SSI image release 3.3(1a) or 3.3(1c) to upgrade to NX-OS (page 13). But those versions are not supported by RecoverPoint and the guide does not state that those versions or later are supported.

So my question is: Can I upgrade to NX-OS from my current versions of the SAN-OS and SSI?

Hi AranH,

To answer your query, I would like to know little more detail about the RecoverPoint. Please share the revision of RecoverPoint what you are using as of now. Accordingly, we will suggest you the next course of action.

Hi Pratik,

I am running RP 3.2.SP3. And I made a typo in the first post, the SSI I am currently running is 3.2(3s) along with SAN-OS 3.3(2).

I had not received any responses on the forum so opened up a case on this (SR35693094) to figure this out. They referred me to primus emc235389, and stated that I will need to disable the SSI image, upgrade to NX-OS, then install a supported SSI image with NX-OS. This is option 1 from the primus. However option 2 leads me to believe that If I do an "install all" with the NX-OS kickstart, system, and SSI images then the upgrade should work. The language of the SSI install and upgrade guide and the primus lead me to believe that it upgrading to NX-OS without upgrading the SSI image is only supported if running SSI 3.3(1a) or 3.3(1c), but that you can upgrade the SSI at the same time with the "install all" command.

Support said that they weren't sure about that and the case is closed. However since option 2 is an option and I do not want to disable the SSI and do not want to rebuild the SANTap configuration (I have done this many times before and it is a lot of painful work), I have decided that I am going to try option 2 on one of the redendant switches during my next maintenance window.

If you can shed any additional light on the issue I would greatly appreciate it. I have yet to find anyone though the support channels that have actually been through a SAN-OS to NX-OS upgrade with SANTap in use.

Thanks,

Aran
