I've learned that using Brocade's SAN Health program is a good start. It produces an Excel sheet with wwpn's, zones, stats, graphs (if you let it run for some time - I always run it for 24 hours or so to see some trending) plus it also produces a Visio file with all SAN attached components on it. And snice it's Visio, you can rearrange the components yourself afterwards. Cool tool !

Hello Muneer,

Microsoft's Visio is a good start for this endeavor and even has a network discovery crawl ability that may or may not be overkill for what you're doing. You can also get, for instance, Cisco product icons of their routers/switches/etc. that you can use with Visio (see links below).

For me, I started out w/ notes and documented each closet/floor/building and worked out from a central nexus. It's a lot of work, especially if you want to accurately represent the ports and switch types you're connected to, as well as physical links therein and as well commenting, etc., and if you are looking for that level of detail, you may be back to doing this by hand.

So it's basically a graphic representation or rather a layout of connected devices.

Kindly find below an example topology:

I hope this answers your question.

Have a great day.

Hello Muneer,

To start with, let us know what GUI do you manage your SAN with, For instance, if you are using EMC Connectrix manager or CISCO Fabric manager, it automatically develops a topology diagram in the GUI. Once the devices are added in a SAN, they create topology diagram and you can customize the view to make it easier for you to understand.

You can also start by gathering logs and getting the outputs of the commands like topologyshow, islshow, fabricshow,  etc ( in case of a brocade switch ) and then start by drawing the diagram connecting the devices together.

I'd definitely recommend connectrix manager and all you have to do is just customize your view to suit your needs.

Thanks,

Ali
