Path degradation after zoning.

We had a problem last night with zoning. Couldn't think of any reason that might have caused the issue. Really appreciated if someone could help me with some thoughts on it. Here is the problem:

A windows server (a)
Powerpath 5.3
Had disks from 'x' & 'y' symmtrix.
we Need to add disks from one more symmetrix 'z.

On San-01 we have following active zones
(a,x) &
(a,y)

Added One of the FA from symm 'z' in to the zone (a,y) to make it (a,y,z) --> for a migration purpose.
After activating the zoneset - we had no issues with paths to disk on 'y' symm but the paths to disks on symm 'x' degraded.

Could someone please help me with some thoughts on why did the paths to symm 'x' degraded.

We backed out of the change and everything was normal again.

hard to say because you did not even touch that zone right  (a,x) ?  Is there a reason you did not create a brand new zone for a,z ?

The best practice is to not have multiple arrays in one zone, and even further a best practice is single initiator single target zoning. Which means one hba port and one storage array port per zone. Redo your zoning following best practices and see if that fixes the problem.

We are planning to perform PPME-OR migration of the server from symm 'y' to 'z'. With EMC recommendations, we thought of having same zone for a, y & z.

Does this have anything to with HBA of the server? did HBA tried to reconnect to all the symms when we tried to activate the zone (a,y,z)??

There is a recommendation to disable Vbit while  usign with Sym. Any chance it was missed for the HBA(hba_flags) to the new sym/dir/port ?
