9148 NPIV question

Hello,

I recently installed and configured a pair of CISCO 9148 switches running IOS 5.2(6a). I configured the TE ports and connected them to my core switches (MDS 9509). No host is zoned there yet. We now have a change in our plans and want to use that pair for NPIV type ports for 2012 Hyper V(Virtual HBAs). I have a few questions.

1. Can I mix ports on the switch(so non virtual and virtual)?

2. If so, should I leave the TE ports connected and then configured the N port on the 9148 to connect to an N port on the core? I know I have to enable NPIV on the core first.

3. Before enabling NPIV on the 9148 do I have to remove the TE connection? I know that enabling NPIV on the edge switch is distruptive.

Many thanks in advance!

you don't even need to enable NPIV on 9509, 9148 is sufficient.

nothing to worry about, NPIV simply enables miltiple FCID logins on the same port.

i am confused by your questions, sorry

so you  have TE ports going between 9148 and 9509, good. Now simply enable NPIV on 9148 and it's not disruptive (where did you see that it was disruptive ?) .

He might be thinking of NPV and not NPIV. NPV is disruptive, NPIV isn't.

So I am worried about the NPV setup.

My current setup

1 port (TE)  edge -----   (TE) port on core

Want to have:

1 port (NPV) edge  --- (NPIV) port on core

however I want to be able to have both virtual and non virtual ports on the same switch(9148).

Many thanks!

Just enable NPIV and you are good to go. I meant to say She and not He in my previous post. Sorry

why do you want NPV on 9148 ? Are you going to have a huge fabric that you want to save domain ids? Look into nested NPV and see if it's going to be supported in your setup ..but honestly why make things more complicated ?

that's fine, by enabling NPIV on 9148 it will allow Hyper-V virtual machines to login to the fabric and get their own fcid ..at that point you will be able to provision storage as if they were "physical" hosts.

Thank you Dynamox for all of your help today! Our windows admins will be adding an additional 450 servers to the HYPER-V environment and want to use virtual IPs. I am of the same mindset you are, however, our management sides with the Windows folks.

Many thanks! My fault and apologies!

Enabling NPIV on the core switch is non-disruptive. DO NOT CONFUSE THIS WITH ENABLING NPV MODE on a switch. Refer to 54201 for this procedure.

I am worried about the edge switch and the TE port already configured there.
