use of 2,5" SSD out of Compellent SCV3020 with SCV360 Enclosure

Hi togeher,

here theSituation. We have Client who want to use some  of his SCV3020 (1,8TB SSD & 1,8TB HDD) Drives in a SCV360 that is behind an other SCV3020 Enclosure.

It seems that there is no 2,5" to 3,5% Conversion Caddy avalible.

I'm think about to search for generic 2,5" to 3,5" SAS Conversion Kits but i'm not sure if the drives will be working in that enviroment.

Is it worth a try?

Best Regards

Matthias

"... Please note the SC400, SC420, SC460, SCv360, SCv320 and SCv300 expansion
enclosures are not going EOL at this time and will remain available for ordering until
End-of-Expansion (EOE), August 15, 2024.."

There is also a "Version (3.6.2021) h15893-387-expansion-enclosure-ss.pdf (155 KB)" but the Link is dead in my Dell portal

So please into contact with your Dell sales rep.

Regards,
Joerg

Hi @coppersmith,

I don't think it will work, as moving from 1 storage to another is not supported. There are some users manage to move, but probably need the help from the call support. What is the drive DPN#?

HI @DELL-Joey C,

the drives has not been used ....they was just spare drives.

1,92TB SSD -3F15R-

1,8TB HDD -6FV4P-

Any other Ideas? I already checked if we can get a SCv320 Expansion but is not avalible anymore.

I belive there is no way to connect a SCV3020 behind a other SCV3020 an use it as Enclosure.

Regards

Hi @coppersmith,

I tried to search in the database, 3F15R and 6FV4P did not appear to be listed for SCv360.

That on paper a 2.5" disk isnt certified/supported in a 3.5" Chassis makes me no wonder and is fully understandable from the vendor perspective.

@coppersmith i would give it a try. If you just place the drive in the bottom you even need a tray.. just put a spacer under the disk.

Dell told us that space parts should be available up to 2024. Because of some JBODs are not available anymore they supportet other models as an extension unit. No you can use a full blown SCv3020 as a JBOD. But when have a second 3020 why not running as a 2nd. main unit and try to split your workload on 2 SANs instead a single one with larger capacity?

Joerg

Does have the SCv360 have a higher minumum disk count limit?

  1. Try to buy a used SC320 shelf
  2. Ask dell if a SC420 is today supportet as extension for your SCv3020

@Origin3k thanks yea the SC320 is also used not available but thanks for your hint.

@DELL-Joey C  did you think SC420 is supported as extension for SCV3020 ?

Hello @coppersmith,

From the user guide, SC420 doesn't seem to be support by SCv3020: https://dell.to/3TUohr3

But don't lose hope, try getting in touch with Dell sales about SC420, maybe there is an updated information if SCv3020 can support it.
