Dell Compellent SCv2020 offline firmware update
Hi all
Our company uses a Dell Compellent SCv2020. Right now, the warranty is expired, and we don't have a maintenance license, but i have encountered a problem.
One of the cache board batteries displays an error:
Cache battery age - Cache board battery requires replacement.
There was a firmware bug on Storage Center versions 6.6.x and lower, where cache battery age was incorrectly reported, according to this document:
The solution would be simple and easy: "upgrade to SCOS 7.3.x or later for permanent remediation"
Problem is, that from version 6.6, the URL changed and Dell SupportAssist cannot connect to check the firmware.
I don't know, that SupportAssist should be able to download the newer SCOS, but for sure the old link is not valid anymore:
https://www.dell.com/storagehelp/dellstorageclient/2015R3
RIght now i see two solutions. Either set the correct URL for SupportAssist, or make an offline update. For the first one, i don't know the right URL, for the second one i cannot find any links to download the distro for Storage Center Update Utility.
Please point me to the right direction, i just want to make our storage usable again, right now the write cache is disabled because of that alert.
Thanks in advance,
Janos

CamelWeb,
Unfortunatly the issue is based on the warranty, as you need to have a support contract to have access to the files.
With your SC system you have to open a support case & we need to get a support assist bundle from the system to create the custom upgrade for you, then we provide a link to download the firmware and instructions on how to install it.
Let me know if this helps.

Hello Chris
Thank you for your answer. I understand, but i don't agree, because in my view, there is a bug in the older firmware which causes incorrect age detection of the battery and i think that bugs should be solved, even outside the warranty period.
Anyway, i made some more tests and situation could be more complicated. I suspect the the SC is incorrectly configured. Why do i think that? Well, for example there is an SMTP server configured for alerts. The mail server is correctly set, but when i click the "Test server", i get an error message (after a loooong time): "Storage Center internal communication error"
If i click "Send SupportAssist Information Now", i get another error message: "SupportAssist data transfer failed"
When i check for software updates, i get the message "Checking for new version of Storage Center software failed. Error communicating with AUS server"
Please help me, how can i check if my SC has internet connectivity?
Best regards,
Janos

Hello Camelweb,
This may help: How to Troubleshoot SupportAssist Phone Home Data Transfer Errors
https://dell.to/40XBYsr
With Compellent you can't upgrade the SCOS without an active warranty.
The system needs an active warranty so that support can do a remote session with you to confirm that there are no issues, such as the issue you are having, on the system prior to the upgrade. If the system is clear of errors then support will release the firmware along with the upgrade steps to do the upgrade.
You may contact support and check into purchasing a Post Standard Support contract.
I recommend contacting support by phone. If you're in USA/Canada you can use this number 1-800-945-3355, otherwise use support phone number for your region.
You have to call Dell Support because neither the files and needed (pre/post) steps are public.

I agree with you wholeheartedly I have the same unit and the exact same problem. I have gone through 4 sets of batteries in the past year the best I had was one week before cache board battery requires replacement re-appeared. without supplying this critical update they are essentially holding my data ransom. Their equipment is broken with a known bug that they admit they have a fix for but they will not provide without substantial payout. Sounds to me like ransomware..
