Help, CX4-120

Hello, I'm new to the EMC storage environment. We are working on a CX4-120 system that was donated to one of our customers. I guess i have a few questions here, that i hope someone can help me out with.....

I'm tasked with setting up this beast on the customers site. My boss want me to setup an SMB share on the SAN, but looking through the UNIsphere, i don't see any options like this, is this possible?

What is the purpose of the Linux management blade that was included with the system? Is this purely for management or can it be configured for other purposes?

IF the SAN is connected to the core SW, is it possible to just create a LUN and attach a VM it?

I've got a ton more questions, but this would help me out to get started in the right direction. Thanks in advance from the noob!

The CX4-120 is a Block storage array only - it cannot provide NAS fileshares (NFS and CIFS) with the aid of a server, either an EMC NAS gateway or a locally-attached server.  However, if there is a Linux management server included, there's the chance there is an EMC NAS gateway along for the ride.

Have you identified all the components - the Clariion SPs, SPS and DAEs?

I think so. From the looks of things we have 2 SPs(SPA and SPB) and possibly 3 DAE's I'm showing Bus 0 Enclosure 0-2 if that's what you mean? Thanks again for the Help.  Is there anyway to tell if the attached Linux box is indeed a NAS Gateway?

When i login to the Linux Box i see this;

EMC Celerra Control Station Linux release 3.0 (NAS 6.0.51)

Looks like a good sign right?

I think what you have is a NS-120. Basically a block array (the CX4-120 back-end storage) and  Celerra Control Station (front-end NAS).

The Control Station is the NAS front-end to the block storage. Using the Control Station you can create file systems that you can then build NAS shares.

You can find most of what you need here:

This is the Control Station that manages the NAS gateway, but it is not the NAS itself.  Can you examine the array physically?  Do you see another pair of blades that are not part of the SPs or DAEs?  Basically, it should be directly connected to two ports on the SPs, and should have some number of GbE ports.

If you can login, see if you can run a few commands:

[nasadmin@test-nas ~]$ /nas/sbin/model

NS40

[nasadmin@test-nas ~]$ /nas/sbin/getreason

10 - slot_0 primary control station

5 - slot_2 contacted

5 - slot_3 contacted

If you see something similar, things should be pretty promising.

I ran the commands and got this;

EMC Celerra Control Station Linux release 3.0 (NAS 6.0.51)

      • slot_0 primary control station ***

EMC NAS Service is not running due to one of the following reasons:

1. EMC NAS Service is still starting or there was an error during

service start-up.

Please logout and try logging in after 5 minutes. It can take up to

15 minutes after Control Station boot for EMC NAS Service to start.

If the problem persists after 3 login retries, please reboot the

Control Station and try again. If this message is still displayed,

contact EMC Customer Support.

2. EMC NAS Software upgrade is in progress, which required stopping

the Service temporarily.

Please DO NOT use the administrative interface while EMC NAS Software

upgrade is in progress. EMC NAS Service starts automatically after

the upgrade finishes.

Until EMC NAS Service starts, administrative commands and interfaces

will not operate.

$

$

$ /nas/sbin/model

NS-120

$ /nas/sbin/getreason

10 - slot_0 primary control station

0 - slot_2 reset

0 - slot_3 reset

$

Any ideas from this output?

The "0" indicates the data movers are unavailable.  Either they're not connected or they are not powered up.  Do you see a 1U server blade with a mix of FC and network interfaces?  That is the datamover enclosure.  If you don't have this, you will need to connect a server to the CX4-120 and share out a LUN as a fileshare.

Let us know if that helps!
