Image preview in Explorer of files stored in Centera

Hi everyone!

We are using a Celerra / Rainfinity / Centera combination to store old files that our users are unwilling or unable to delete. We're a private company and the management here has the "keep everything forever" mentality. The problem that we're running into is that our PR people have a lot of old pictures (jpeg, tif, bmp, etc) that they are no longer able to see a thumbnail for on their computers. Before these files were moved from the Celerra, they could see a thumbnail of these files in Windows Explorer without having to open them. Now that these files have been moved to the Centera using our Rainfinity, Explorer just lists the files with the generic icon with the little "offline" flag on them. They can open the file to view it but Explorer will not generate the thumbnail view anymore. This is causing frustration for these users because they can no longer simply scroll through the directory to find a picture they want. They have to open each one to find what they are looking for - and we have tens of thousands of pictures. Any ideas?

sagle,

Thanks for the reply. The problem is that these files need to be moved to the Centera due to capacity issues on our Celerra. Somehow Windows Explorer needs to "open" these files enough for the Celerra/Rainfinity to actually fetch the content from the Centera.

You can create rules on the archiving job to not archive the files you are having issues with.

I'm going to open a case with EMC Support and see what they can come up with. I'll post their answer when I get it.

Well, it looks like I'm out of luck on this one. EMC Support has come back saying that this "is by design." It seems that Explorer does not open an image in the traditional way to create the preview and that is causing it to fail when it tries to make an image preview of a stubbed file.

We have had thsame issue. aised it several times with EMC Support. We now have a work round we have to test to see if it works. Only thing is The work round is only for Celerra file systems that are archived.
The work royund relates to the passthrough function of the Celerra dhsm.

Could you please provide more detail of your work around? I've been living with the image preview problems for quite some time after being told the same thing by support. I'm very interested in possible solutions. Thanks!

PDLS,

If you would, please post what your work around is if you have any luck with it. My problem is with archived Celerra file systems so if this works you'll be my new best friend!

We had a similar problem with some of our users and their images. Windows Explorer will not show the thumbnail. All of our user workstations have Microsoft Office installed and we showed them the "Microsoft Office Picture Manager" application, which will successfully show a thumbnail of an archived item. Don't know if this is a valid suggestion for your users or not.
