Applying updates on new Dell M1000e Chassis

We have racked and done some initial configuration of our new Dell Blade Chassis. We have not connected any of the ports in the I/O modules yet and we only have (3) blades inserted but not turned on. However, we are just getting used to the CMC web interface. The question we have is, does the CMC automatically detect if a new firmware version is available by using the CMC network connection or does it have to have a connection from the I/O modules?

The CMC controller has its own discrete network connection. You do not need any I/O modules installed or blades installed (we didn't) to update the CMC firmware.
