x14 R1, out of warranty, battery health issues

Alienware x14

Alienware x14

Hello Dell Community and Support Team,

I am writing to seek advice and potential solutions for a critical issue I'm experiencing with my Alienware X-14 laptop. Purchased on May 25, 2022, my laptop's battery health has deteriorated alarmingly within a year, raising concerns about its longevity and performance.

Details of the concern are as follows:

  • Laptop Model: Alienware X-14
  • Purchase Date: May 25, 2022
  • Primary Issue: Drastic reduction in battery capacity and short usage duration (barely 2 hours).
  • Battery Health Report Insights:
    • Design Capacity: 80,507 mWh
    • Full Charge Capacity: 59,223 mWh
    • Cycle Count: 92

Given the laptop's age and my moderate usage pattern, such a significant drop in battery capacity is unexpected and seems abnormal. This has not only limited the portability of my device but also affected its usability for my day-to-day activities.

I am particularly interested in understanding the options available under Dell's warranty. If a battery replacement is the recommended course of action, I would like guidance on how to proceed with this process.

What are my options for resolving this issue?

I appreciate your prompt attention to this matter and look forward to your guidance and support.

Thank you very much.

Regards

Hi @CedricBoivin welcome to this free user-to-user Alienware laptop discussion forum. This is not Dell Support. There is free laptop battery warranty only within the first year basic Dell warranty. Thereafter, the user can pay for an expensive three year laptop battery warranty. Dell Laptop Battery Warranty Support | Dell US. Most users install a new OEM replacement battery DP/N VG661 in their Alienware x14 R1 (2/22/22). Dell laptop protection system will only accept an OEM replacement battery. Dell specs state the average life expectancy of a battery is 1 1/2 to 2 years depending on the number of charging cycles. With your battery approaching the 1 1/2 year age that drop in capacity is not totally unexpected. This Dell support page may help.

Hello  @JOcean  and Dell Support Team,

Thank you for your response. I understand that Dell's specifications state an average battery life expectancy of 1 1/2 to 2 years. However, I would like to highlight that there is a significant difference between the average lifespan of a product and thewarranty obligations set forth by manufacturers.

In this case, my Alienware X-14 laptop's battery has shown a substantial decrease in capacity within just over a year, which is considerably short of the 1 1/2 year mark. This rapid deterioration, especially under moderate use, does not align with the reasonable expectations of durability and performance for a high-quality laptop.

Given the premium nature of the Alienware brand and the price point of these laptops, consumers reasonably expect a higher standard of durability and performance.

Therefore, I kindly request further assistance or guidance on how to proceed. I believe a battery replacement or an appropriate solution under the warranty terms would be a fair resolution to this issue.

I look forward to your support in resolving this matter to a satisfactory standard.

Thank you once again for your attention.

Best regards,

@CedricBoivin I was stating the average qualities. For the assistance you are looking for a Dell Employee/Moderator can possibly offer more information and/or advice.

@crimsom Thank you, I will contact them directly. The issue is that Quebec's legal warranty is more than one year.

Article 37 and Article 38 from the OPC are very clear:

  1. A good that is the subject of a contract must be such that it can be used for the purpose for which it is normally intended.

  2. A good that is the subject of a contract must be such that it can be used for a normal period of time, considering its price, the terms of the contract, and the conditions of use of the good.

Dell has the legal obligation to replace the battery because due to the price, the duration of the warranty is really not sufficient.

Has you can see the battery degradation is very quick.
