M17x R4, access to HDMI input

Hi,

I have an Alienware M17x R4 and I cannot access my HDMI input function, my F8/Hdmi in button has stopped working and I was wondering if there was any other way cross over to HDMI other than just tapping on the F8 media function.

There's actually a few buttons that don't work on my laptop but that's not the train smash as I am using an external keyboard. But my main mission as explained above is that I've been desperately trying to get it to work to play my PS4 off my laptop's monitor but there's no way to "Switch over" to it I know of.

Any help whatsoever will be greatly appreciated! Even if it was a guide to toggle the command through some bios activity or through CMD or even through TeamViewer with someone who has the same laptop just to permanently leave the HDMI input on I would be Uber happy!

Waiting in anticipation!

Kind regards,

MarkeeMark

What operating system?  Your model has 2 hdmi ports--in and out. Make sure you are connecting the cable to the IN port. Instead of using the shortcut key, just connect the cable to the right input. See the manual

If you are still using windows 7 you should know that it is unsafe to use the computer on the internet. No more security updates.

Hi Thorium,

Thanks for the response,

I am using windows 10 pro - fully up to date. The cable works 100% as I've used in on my TV that now needs repairs.

The port that I use is the HDMI input port.

My problem is that the F8/Hdmi in button does not work that changes over the screen to the HDMI input port Wich allows my screen to be used as a monitor for other devices. Now I just need to figure out if there's another method to switch over to my HDMI in port.

Please let me know if there is a simple command to switch over or another sequence of buttons to push or script where I can edit it from being "Disabled" to "enabled" or from "0" to "1' in a .ini file.

I've been pulling out my hair trying to find a solution but nothings biting just yet.

Waiting in anticipation.

Thanks

Is it supposed to switch over automatically? If so, assume the HDMI input button has been pressed to switch over to the main computer OS and suddenly stopped working to switch back to the PS4. How would one then alternatively switch back to the PS4 screen now that the button no longer works.. I've already tried unplugging the HDMI cable from the too right port back out then in again... No response. I know everything works. Just the button has stopped working.. there must be an alternative solution to cross over to the PS4 screen.

It's a long shot but maybe try reinstalling your chipset drivers.

Hi MattyB

I'll attempt this and let you guys know.

Thanks.

Hi Matty,

Unfortunately it did not solve the problem. I had my hope that it would somehow set the Hdmi input switch on as a default setting but that did not do the trick.

Is there no way to edit it in a bios function or in a windows script anywhere?

Thanks in advance guys.

Can you change anything in the display settings (right click on the desktop)?

I've ventured into the display settings multiple times only to find the options to manipulate my graphics settings through intel gfx tray and display properties.

All for output measures nothing for input.

It could be a display driver issue but maybe it's just faulty hardware.

There should be a solution out there. I don't believe it is a hardware issue, when I plug in my HDMI into the input and head over to my sound settings, It picks up the HDMI cable that is plugged into the input slot as a potential recording device therefore there is activity. I'll keep this thread up to date should I find anything that works.

Thanks again.

Sounds like you need to re-install the Alienware On Screen Display Application on your laptop to get the FN keys to work. I did this with my Switch and shows a pop up that the Hdmi In is "ON", but unfortunately get a black screen. My Switch screen goes black as if I docked it.

Well, I would consider using the feature to lock the fn keys and here is a link https://www.wikihow.com/Use-Function-Keys-Without-Pressing-Fn-on-Windows-10 but I am sure there is another way in Windows settings too, I hope it helps. I am trying to use the input port for streaming, also, closing the lid and opening it will fix the black screen.
