m15 R1, upgrading SSD

i have an alienware M15 R1. right now i’m planning to upgrade my SSD in my m.2 slot to a WD Black NVMe 1tb SSD. however i’ve never done this before and so i’m very confused whether i can get this ssd with a heat sink and install that into my laptop or is that only for desktops and so should i get it without the heat sink?

@LEMHN

This is a hard one to call.

Most heat-sinks that come with M.2 SSD"s is just a thin layer of copper or silicon pad.

I just check the warehouse and I do not have your model to do any further research.

I would think the one that comes with the SSD would be fine???

I have a pallet of Alienware in the warehouse next door.

If I find one I'll post back.

Heatsinks for laptop SSD do not exist. There is no space for heatsinks in SSD.

So do not worry about such kinds of SSD.

Just get a normal M.2 SSD for your laptop and install it.

Ah ok. But i do have a question because i’m a little confused. so the heat sink is the brown coloured metal plate above the ssd? also i’m not sure mine has one because i don’t remember seeing it but i could be wrong. if i don’t where could i get one? will dell support sell it to me if i email them? also i currently have a 128GB ssd and 1tb hdd. i want to replace my 128GB ssd with a WD Black NVMe 1tb SSD. will i need a heat sink for that? and will the heatsink only need to cover my the new nvme ssd?

Welcome to the Dell Community @LEMHN

@RuskinF first thing heat-sinks for laptop M.2 SSD's do exist and in many shapes and sizes!!!

If you would have taken the time to do some research you would know that m15 R1 does have a heat-sink.

Alienware m15 Service Manual:

https://www.dell.com/support/manuals/us/en/19/alienware-m15-laptop/alienware-m15-service-manual/procedure-to-remove-m2-2280-solid-state-drive?guid=guid-f21ed3c7-e9b5-42bd-9b8b-626ece087144&lang=en-us

I think the heat-sink that is installed will work with a 2230 and 2280.

Best regards,

U2

this is a link to the ssd i want to get. there is an option to get it with a heat sink or without. will the heatsink on this work or will it have to be the brown plate that i may or may not have already in my laptop.
