m15 R1, no power, no charge light when plugged in

Alienware m15

Alienware m15

Good day folks,

Bit of an issue with an Alienware M15 r1. I was given this to take a look at by a friend that was experiencing issues with his secondary HDD not showing up in windows. So, after checking all the software and not seeing anything I decided to take a look under the hood.

When I opened it up, the case pushed itself off and I found a very swollen battery. This was removed as it is a safety hazard and I didn't want to squeeze the case back on. So going back to my original issue I reseated the HDD cable and reassembled to test but, now I'm not getting any sign of life at all...

The cable is plugged in, I've tried several outlets, I have tried a power drain several times, I have removed the CMOS battery and let it sit for five minutes and replaced, and even reseating the battery to try it with that and I cant get it to turn on.

Any help here would be great as Id like to at least get it back to the state it was in when it was given to me, functional not a brick.

Thanks in advance!

Hi @Gargant welcome to this free user to user Alienware laptop discussion forum.

The swollen battery is very dangerous, if it starts leaking it will destroy everything including humans. It has the potential to catch fire and should be placed in temporary dry storage away from the house and people, awaiting safe disposal. Handling swollen Lithium-ion batteries

Laptop without battery is designed to work as Desktop on ac adapter power. When ac adapter (charger) is plugged into mains supply, does the diagnostic LED work, and when plugged into laptop, does ac adapter's diagnostic LED remain on?

Please use a different Dell OEM ac adapter, to see if laptop will power-on.

Good day!

The battery was removed once discovered and placed in a bucket of sand outside my home.

I have the laptop reassembled but, there is no diagnostic LED on the machine when plugging into power. The AC adapter shows green when plugged in. I have tried two (second confirmed working on a functional machine).

Hi @Gargant ,

I believe something seems to be wrong with the laptop after the battery was swollen and removed, have you tried jump starting the motherboard and see if that works?

there should be a CLPR3 pin underneath the RAM.

Hi @Gargant thank you for sharing update.

Having confirmed that ac adapter works on other laptops, it seems that the laptop's dc power-adapter port cable should be replaced. See Dell support power-adapter port cable Alienware m15 DC Power Input Jack Plug with Cable is Dell Part Number (DP/N) T1F4G. This should reinstate Alienware m15 function. Search for part on eBay.

Check all the cable connections just to make sure that something wasn't unplugged accidentally.

Try removing the RAM modules to see if anything changes.

The other possibility is that the board was shorted while you were removing the battery.
