Factory reset/disk wipe of a Alienware X17 R1 w/OEM Windows?

Hello everybody!

I'd like to sell my (already out of warranty) Alienware X17 R1.

It came with an OEM Windows 10 preinstalled.

Is there an easy way to do a "Factory Reset" of this laptop? I mean, erase the current data from the drive and make the laptop pull the fresh OS image from its recovery partition so that when it turns on you're greeted with the config menu as if it was new.

I'm afraid that if I manually start uninstalling stuff from it I'll leave out some of my personal data and pass it to the buyer.

Thanks!

Yes, you can easily perform a factory reset on your Alienware X17 R1 to ensure all your personal data is erased and the laptop is restored to its original state with the OEM Windows 10 installation. Here are the steps you can follow:

  1. Backup Important Data: Before you start, make sure to backup any important data you might need later as this process will erase everything on your drive.

  2. Access Recovery Options:

    • Click on the Start menu and select Settings.
    • Go to Update & Security.
    • Select Recovery from the menu on the left.
  3. Reset this PC:

    • Under the "Reset this PC" section, click on Get started.
    • Choose the Remove everything option to ensure all your personal files, apps, and settings are deleted.
  4. Restore Factory Settings:

    • If you have a recovery partition, you may see an option to Restore factory settings. Select this option if available. This will reset your laptop to its original state with the OEM Windows 10 image.
  5. Follow the On-Screen Instructions: The process will guide you through the steps. Your laptop will restart several times, and the process may take some time.

  6. Final Setup: Once the reset is complete, your laptop will boot up to the initial setup screen, as it was when you first got it.

You may want to follow with a disc wipe utility to render all the data on the drive unrecoverable -- simply restoring the OS won't do this.  There are plenty of options for that, some free.

@ejn63 Thank you very much! Oddly enough I didn't look at the support documentation first before asking here :)

Yes, I will use a file "shredder" on the most sensitive folders before perfroming the reset.
