17 R5, Windows 11, onboard keyboard

Alienware 17 R5

Alienware 17 R5

Hello,
I have an issue with my Alienware 17 R5, bought June 2019 running Windows 11. I haven't used the built-in keyboard for a few years as it is essentially a desktop with external monitor. However, I have now tried to boot into BIOS and find that the keyboard is dead, not only at boot, but always. Touchpad works, but neither keyboard nor inbuilt Tobii for Windows Hello either. I read somewhere that somebody had a similar problem, maybe due to non-supported Windows 11, which I have also upgraded to? Since it is out of guarantee, I have no idea if it is a hardware or software issue. I would like to know if an external USB keyboard would work at BIOS boot (for F2/F12) as well as direction keys and Enter within BIOS.

Related question: would a Logitech USB dongle keyboard work as well? If so, then I will buy a basic, cheap cabled/dongle keyboard to use in BIOS when I need it.

- keyboard doesn't work - external is OK, but travel is a pain
- inbuilt Tobii doesn't work - an external Tobii under my external monitor is fine
- driver support for Windows 11 is painful as I have to hunt manually to see if something might be new, somewhere
The keyboard is the biggest pain as I have to carry a mini keyboard with me when I travel as my main external split keyboard is too massive.

If anyone finds a solution (drivers or whatever) for the keyboard, I would be most appreciative.

Sorry for late reply - USB cabled keyboard works!

Camera still doesn't, but I hate video calls - no problem.

I will surely have to replace the MB one day

My issue has now gotten worse because I set msconfig to do a safe boot and now Windows is stuck at logon saying Hello camera doesn't work and I don't have a keyboard for the pin :-(
So I will go and buy a cabled USB keyboard and hope that it is seen at boot-time.
Wish me luck!
