17 R5, SSD-1,2,3 & HDD/SSD connections

Hi @Alienware-Tammy  please update the Dell Community users with what can be connected to the 17 R5 System Board. Have looked at the Dell 17 R5 Setup and Specifications, Dell 17 R5 Service Manual and Dell 17 R5 Parts & Upgrades and these sources of information are not clear. We now have Dell Technician speculation.

We have questions about the 17 R5 System Board connections and its capability.

Q1. Dell 17 R5 Setup and Specifications, page 18 says there are three M.2 card slots for Solid State Drive (SATA/PCIe). This seems explicit and unambiguous. However, when our 17 R5 went in for Warranty to correct the SSD-2 slot fault, we are told that a Dell Technician says only the SSD-1 M.2 2242 solid-state drive slot and the SSD-3 M.2 2280 solid-state drive slot supports both SATA AHCI cards and PCIe NVMe cards, but that the SSD-2 M.2 2280 solid-state drive slot only supports PCIe NVMe cards (not SATA AHCI cards). Now we do not know what to believe. Is it possible to stop this speculation? Please tell us what the 17 R5 System Board actually supports.

Q2. Dell 17 R5 Setup and Specifications, page 20 says: Your computer supports one hard drive and three solid-state drives. There is SATA AHCI support for one 2.5-inch hard drive. However we note that the 17 R5 System Board says that this is a HDD/SSD socket. We did not find how to use this socket to connect more solid-state drives. Please tell use what the 17 R5 System Board actually supports.
