15 R2, upgrade SSD

Hi I have an alienware 15 R2. I intend to buy a new ssd. But I have read about all ssd's and says that only Sata is compatible with this alienware 15R3. Or the opposite, NVme or both. So I was wondering if this ssd is compatible with my alienware? Or what are the best options for me to buy?

That drive should work as the M.2 slot accepts M.2 NVME/PCIe or SATA 3. The following forum post should help. There have been posts by some users who had trouble with the 970 but the 960 seems to be solid.

Hi @chucky22  welcome to this user to user discussion forum.

Support for Alienware 15 R2 Storage says this has two M.2 slots and a 2.5-inch bay. The M.2 slots will accept a fast or ultrafast M.2 PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe card or a slow M.2 SATA card. The 2.5-inch SATA bay will accept a slow Hard Disk Drive or a slow Solid-State Drive.

The Windows operating system should be installed on the fast or ultrafast M.2 PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe card which is then your OS(C:) boot drive. The other M.2 slot becomes a fast NVMe Data drive, the 2.5-inch bay is a slow SATA Data drive.

It would help if you would share how the Alienware 15 R2 is going to be used, and your expectations on what the proposed upgrade is going give you.

The Samsung 970 EVO is a fast M.2 PCIe Gen3 x4 NVMe card and can be installed in the M.2 slot. The fast Samsung 970 EVO has Read/Write speeds up to 550/520 MB/s, the newer ultrafast Samsung 970 EVO Plus has Read/Write speeds up to 3,500/3,300 MB/s. The 1TB and 2TB usually have better Read/Write speeds, your Alienware 15 R2 has the ultrafast Read/Write 3,500/3,300 MB/s capability.

Amazon's Samsung 970 EVO Plus reduced sale price makes this an attractive purchase.
