I had the same issue.  If I unplug the charger and plug it back in, the battery will charge.  If I'm just surfing around the internet all is fine, but the moment I log into a game, the charger stops working and the battery discharges in about 30mins.

Very disappointed in my purchase

Try a power drain:

1. Unplug every external device from the system (including the AC Adapter)

2. Open the bottom cover and disconnect the battery cable. Use this video as a reference to see how to disconnect the battery cable (just the cable, sec 29-31) Alienware 17 R4 & Alienware 15 R3: Battery Disassembly - YouTube

3. Hold the power button for around a minute to drain all the power out.

4. Reassemble the system and reload the latest Bios version.
