Alienware M17-R1 - Changing Colours
Hi there,
Im new to this community, i have recently bought a M17-R1 Alienware Laptop and im amazingly happy with it all.
The only thing that i cannot figure out is how to change the red lights under my keyboard to another colour?
Ive looked all over online, watched videos, etc etc and people say that if i go into the Alienware Command Center and click FX i can do this.
The only problem is that when i open up the Command center i do not have this option? i only have the 3, Fusion, Touch and Sense?
Any ideas?
Kind regards,

issue remains is it actually a M17 .. pre dell system ... like TROY's is seeming to believe .... or is it a M17X dell system..
TROY has a M17 (actual alienware not dell's) so it wont have service tag (other thread with video issues(3870's)
as for OP the question will be the same.. is it a M17 or M17X pre dell(sept 2009) or after ..

Hi,
The M17-R1 does not have a service tag, and the Command centre you are trying to install is for the M17x
which is the next model above the M17-R1 , therefore it won't work as the M17-R1 doesn't have an FX controler board in it.
I hyave an M17-R1, unfortunaltely the keyboard is a non illuminated model, But I think to change the colour of the keyboard
you use the same keys as you would to change the Blue alien head on the cover.

Nearly a year down the line im still having this issue.
Ive just put up with it and cancelled the error boxes, but now i want to put it to rest.
Ive taken a copy of both the error boxes from Windows Net Framework and the Alienware software.
Does this help?
Microsoft .NET Framework

Hi KIllaplex,
The command centre you have installed is for the M17x
The warning screens are because the M17-R1 doesn't have an FX controler board fitted inside the laptop ( The M17x has the FX board inside though, and this machine can change multi colours)
You will need to uninstall the command centre then download the
M17 OSD Utility (Version 2.01) install this first
then install this version of the command centre for the M17-R1
there is an option of 3 one for vista 32 bit, one for vista 64 bit and one for win7
choose the one for your system and install it.
you can only change touch, and sense but not the colours there is no FX for the M17-R1
However to change the colour of your keyboard, if it is an illuminated one. (some models don't have an illuminated keyboard)
once M17 OSD Utility (Version 2.01) (on screen display) is installed press and hold down the Fn key and press F10 repeatedly the keyboard colours will change from Red to Green to blue then off ( no colours) and you will see FX on the laptop screen showing which colour you are choosing.
PS. The alien head on the lid will only be blue and the lights on the quick panel at top of keyboard will only be blue ( these cannot change to any other colour )
Here is a link for the M17 Drivers for the M17-R1.

hope this helps.
