Alienware Aurora Overclocking Issue help!
Hi guys,
I am considering purchasing a brand spanking new Alienware Aurora desktop. My current configuration is looking something like this:
-Intel® Core™ i7 930 Quad Core Processor (2.8GHz, 8MB Cache)
-Single 1GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon™ HD 5870
-6GB Triple Channel 1333Mhz DDR3
-1TB - SATA-II, 3Gb/s, 7,200RPM, 32MB Cache HDD
The rest is not very important. I've read up on the dell support site which states you can overclock your Alienware Aurora automatically by following a few simple steps in the BIOS and choosing a 'Load Level 1 OC Setting' option. I have never overclocked in my life so its either using the automatic overclock feature or staying at stock.
1) Is the 'Load Level 1 OC Setting' option 100% safe and there would be no need to check the voltage and heat?
2) I've read that it is recommended to have 1600MHz ram to compliment an overclocked i7 CPU. Will my 6GB Triple Channel 1333MHZ DDR3 work fine with the Level 1 OC Setting?
3) Exactly how fast is the i7 930 Level 1 OC Setting and the i7 920 Level 1 OC Setting? Which is the better buy?
Please help

Load Level One is only for extreme edition Intel processors. The i7-930 does not qualify. That said, OC'ing the 930 is very easy from the BIOS. I overclocked mine in about 5 minutes from 2.8 to 3.6 by just upping the base frequency. With the 1333 RAM (which I also have), you won't get much higher since the RAM overclocks along with the processor. That said, 3.6 is pretty fast. I know of folks who have gotten over 4 GHz, but that is with 1600 RAM. Very expensive to get 400 MHz more out of the processor.
My temps run around 40 idle and 50 maxed out (100% on all cores).
As for which processor, get the 930. Intel has discontinued the 920 (930 replaced it). I have been very happy with my system and I think you will be, too.

I've got the 920 and also 1333 RAM.
You can use the Level 1 OC with the XE CPUs and the 920.
It runs save at 3,2GHz.
The Temps of my 920 are about 40° Idle and 70° under load.
But my CPU is always very hot. @ default it's running at 68° under load.
