Alienware 17 R5 mini Displayport to external Displayport monitor not working.

Hello,

so, I've had this notebook since it was deployed (2014), and always used it for gaming. Two weeks ago I've decided to buy a 144hz capable external monitor (Benq Zowie XL2430), so I could up my game. I've researched carefully as to whether I would be able to play with these conditions, and had some positive feedback. Together with the monitor I had also bought a mini DisplayPort to DisplayPort cable at BestBuy, since the monitor only came with a DP to DP cable and a dual link DVI.

Well, the day the monitor arrived I plugged it to the monitor with the miniDP cable to DP I bought, but nothing happened. I figured I should install some kind of drivers fisrt, so I tried connecting with and HDMI cable and it worked flawlessly. When the monitors drivers were installed I tried once again to make the connection with the miniDP. This time, both screens flashed (the monitor's and the notebook's) and then image appeared on both monitors, with the Clone projection option selected. I knew it worked because I had options on the Display Settings for 3D and 60+ refresh rates.

Since I did not need the notebook's monitor to be on, I set it to just show on the second screen (external monitor). Just as I selected this option, both screens flashed once again, but this time the external monitor had no image and the notebook monitor, not recognizing any connection, lighed up showing that video had a malfunction. I went to check the GPUs (onboard and offboard) on the Device Manager and both showed the yellow warning that they had crashed.

After this event, every time I try to connect the notebook to the monitor with DisplayPort, both screens flash and there is an apparent established video connection between the two, but I can only see the mouse cursor on the external monitor with absolutely no background image (plain black behind the cursor) in both the external and notebook monitors.

Basically, from that day, I was only able to successfully connect the notebook to the monitor with a HDMI cable.

If anyone could help me solve this issue, I would be thankful for life.

Thanks in advance  :)

Hi,

I would suggest a Windows update. Or at least, before that, you can try reinstalling the video drivers for the Intel and nVidia card. In addition, a BIOS update might help. There is also the possibility that the adapter you are using is not suitable for the connection you want to make. You may need an "active adapter" that is more expensive, but usually works better.

A bad cable or a cable not capable of supporting the high refresh rate may be your problem. I have the Alienware 17 (2013) and have had problems with cables that are supposed to support 60Hz not even supporting 60Hz. On other hand, I've got a 4K monitor, not a high-refresh 1080p monitor.
