X51 R2, 2014, suggestion how to upgrade?

Is it unable to use a new motherboard on this?

For latest tech, a complete new system is the only option.
You cannot put the latest CPU on that motherboard and it would not make sense from a cost perspective to upgrade that machine to the highest available standard from that era.
I would say it's time to retire that machine as it has served you hopefully well over the past 8 years.

An X51-R2 is not worth upgrading.
It's power-supply (and form-factor, ie, cooling) is more like a laptop than a desktop in the first-place.
The Aurora is your upgrade-path if you want to stay-with Alienware.

It would not be worth it. You would be looking at a new MB, CPU, RAM, SSD, Video Card, Power supply, CPU cooler, case fans, new Windows version, and you would all need to install that yourself.
It would be cheaper to just purchase a new machine than purchase these items individually.
I would use your current system until a sale is up.
