The ALX Files: Swapping Area-51 R5 x299 Motherboard into R1 R2 (R4 Intel / R3-R7 AMD TR4)

-Due to the Dellware Forum '5' Picture Limit, I'll Publish this in a Series-

_____________

TL;DR

~$10 buys you two desktop wiring-adaptor types & they're ALL that stands between your 51 R1 respawning into a 51 R5 with working AlienF/X case LED lights + a *pair* of working Top I/O External USB2.0 ports  ... or not ...

Capture - Copy.JPG

*ProTip*: Buy x2 USB 3.0-to-2.0 (left) + the Pwr On-Off Switch (right)

MY Work Is Done Here. Thank You Ladies & Gentlemen & Good Night

_______________________________

Just kidding ... there's WAY MORE to this swap

Jokes aside ... at MINIMUM you'll need the above two ~$10 wire-cable-adaptor-types

-Stay Tuned for Other More Involved Options-

  • Note: R4 can't run later R5 Intel 9xxx-series chips, R3 R6 can't run later R7 AMD TRip 29xx-series chips --> no CPU BIOS support for earlier R3 R4 R6 boards ... R5 can't run later Intel 10xxx-series either )=

Wouldn't you like to know the truth?
Of what's out there, to have the proof?
And find out just which side you're on?
Where would you end? In Heaven?
Or in.

March 2023 & my R1 was glad to learn I'd scored an inexpensive but important list of newer R5 Alien Hardware ('Alienware') from some old guy who seems to have RageQwit his machine, all for just $160 including:
MthrBrd 7800x CPU AIO Cooler NVME SSD WiFi

NVME drive has original Dell Win10 Pro Factory Recovery Partition + legit 10Pro License (mthrbrd/cpu is a matched activating pair--> HooRah) $118/mailed

FIO + Asst FIO Cables + Rear I/O Trim $42/mailed

*$1 USB adaptor to the Rescue:

After I sell the unwanted whimpy R5 alien-cooler & FIO board, R1 makes out like an upgrade bandit while I've made out w/a certain headache from initial frustrations & down-time lost from figuring this alienboard out; a match made in heaven, so an in-between middling Earthly affair for us so far. Fact is, & this is a fact, a *$1 USB adaptor was all that stood between Jeremy & I, & the nightmare-ish Terrance McKenna-ish DMT-ish Machine Elves-ish beginnings, but ... since the only way out is through ... we made our way out of & through this electonic scape onto the other side & reached what else ... the paradise & retreat known as Area-51 DreamLand ... & so can u ...

When Two Worlds Collide: Alien v Alien

R1 Phobos Case v R5 Triad Alienboard

Competing Proprietary Evil Ancient Alien Technologies

Say it upfront: the only true things of special interest to an R1 owner are plugging in the Alien F/X MIO board, installing CmndCntr software & having lights turn back on, while R5 board's true point of interest are alien-headers for FrontPanel (power on/off) & USB2.0. In the end, after your hardware swap, once u turn the desktop on & lights come on, that's when & where all this alien magic happens so I'll show & tell right now how I dealt with specific Areas of Interest & Concern, since power & lights on, not off, is when & where they're black magic Evil AlienTech became unwanted mysteries here to solve

IMG_6585A.jpg

In short: neither pair of the R5 mthrbrd's alien-looking USB2.0 ports seem to support the use of the R1 MIO board even though it's a simple USB2.0 device. The FrontPanel header deserves your equal attention also. All three white headers need human-level interventions as work-arounds if u wish to use one, two, or all *three (*Note: AMD R3 R6 R7 have x1 USB header, Intel R4 R5 have x2 USB headers)

So! Want your AlienF/X Case Lights Back On?
Solved:

Magic Ingredient

Capture.JPG
--> R1 MIO NEEDS a USB3.0 to 2.0 Adaptor <--

Now that you know you MUST use either adaptor type above -& with it your MIO issue solves- CmndCntr software & R5's special FP + USB2.0 header solutions will also solve next. Here, & for $6/mailed, I bought a 5pack of the cheaper left adaptor type yet six came in the package, so for *$1 my nightmare over not knowing the R5 USB2.0 alien-headers were refusing to work for finally ended. Oh, they still refuse to work & the why of it's still a mystery I don't need to solve anymore after the 3.0 adaptor came to the rescue. I'll return to this shortly because there's other good news to spread in Part1, but for now, spy the Intro Cont: R5 MthrBrd Pre & Post Install (B4 / After) IRL Pictures

What began life as a $3.50/mailed 12" Dell PowaEdge K888G USB2.0 cable w/2.0mm pitch + side-clips is FULLY weaponized, now become Fat Man & Litte Boy, & so my new stealthier Front Panel JFP1 & USB2 5x5 JST alien-header adaptors. My Boyz. I modded this, as I had to, as a FrntPnl cable to have the correct x6 wires which grab header-pins PWRLED (2/4) PWRSW (6/8) HDDLED (1/3) & send to same reciprocal JFP1 case 5x5 pin-slots (I connected it right, lol). ONLY the PWRSW 6/8 R5 JST-type pins are live & work (it makes sense: R2-R7 alienboards have dead PWRLED & HDDLED pins for normal reasons related to their Mthrbrd & LOGO board which handle those LEDs)

I linked domestic buyers to the direct-connexion for an ez-had timely-delivery for what u need, they're just west of Boston:
⦁ toll-free # is 1-800-UnBelievable
⦁ it's an off-the-shelf 2.0 to 2.54 machine-crafted adaptor

  • I asked & yes it only arrives as 50parts blkmajik 50parts blüdmajik wire-color-type as seen
  • for an all-blk just-as-stealthy cable, currently, seek the Far East as linked & expect a longer delivery

~10years ago, King Jeremy did a ZooLander pose for the window'd door panel looking-glass mod, & my R1's have demanded what they heard was called FengShui but just knew they needed what-ev-ah it's called, so cbl-mngmnt + interior exterior 'looks'... handsome for the boys & beau-ti-full-ness for my girl-Alien Loli*. ______________

You want the micro-2.0mm 5x5 type, not the larger standard 2.54mm DuPont

  • DuPont makes a 2.0mm pitch 5x5 ALSO, I used one (Classified Weapon-X) so DuPont's 2.0 is the eqwivalent of a JST 2.0 --> 2.0 to us will mean 'micro' = JST
  • 'DuPont' will = 2.54mm the industry-standard

My K888G Silver Bullets Fatman + Lilboi & YOUR Ultimate Weapons Cable Cache + our MIO USB 3.0 = 2.0 Adaptors Suite closes this Section on Area-51 Areas of No More Concern

I'll say this: I used 0NX92 + W4J5H (alt # = 27J7M) white JST-type R5 factory FrntPnl + USB2.0 cables; I bought them after-all, in fact I mysteriously sweated way-back-when when that old-man didn't come up off & rage-qwit on=the-spot those cables & the rest of the loot, but he did hand-over the loot. After testing? I don't need these R5 JST-types so neither do you --> I yanked them out today --> NUKED THEM --> one is 24" one is 27" = 51 Area-51" inches of anaconda cable where Silver Bullets & Ult-Weapons cost-less & are far stealthier. Period. Plus, Dell Spare Parts > get this >  HAS NONE

If you're another 51 R2 x99 owner swap-curious for a 'newer' Win11 minimum-Compliant R3-R7 board? I was curious too, since 2017 lol. You need help, u do NOT need the factory JST white-type u heard about. You *on paper* need:

  • Ultimate Weapon 2.0 to 2.54 adaptor x2, for JFP1 FrtPnl On-Off + FIO board USB Comms*
  • Basic FIO board USB2.0 cable extension, female to Male, 12-18-24" (shortest u can get) to help reach mthrbrd header-area etc; x2 if your front panel cable's too short (poke hole w/ needle etc, ask if unsure) after using both w/ ULT-WPN if cables are still too short (!!! ... just ask)

*On Paper* IDK if your V2.0 FIO H6HK9 WILL or WON'T toss the anti-migration error it did to my MIO board (I suspect not !!!); if it does, buy a USB 3.0 = 2.0 adaptor for FIO & report back

Google, or see a rare Dellware forum R2 = R3-R7 swap w/ basic Q & A:

-Take a Timeout-

Huddle-up. I'm not going to take u step-by-step on teardown the system & remove/replace mthrbrd & tidy it all up & land that plane safely in the forum, since R1 is a ~typical desktop case that requires ~typical basic skills to work with & in those Areas of Concern I'll lend the helping hand u may need as normal, but u will find attached older user-swap PDF's soon that cover that old ground & conquered territory if u need it. For now, tips & context:

0) Whether removing old alienboard or installing new, lay a t-shirt down over your lower side panel & get these case parts out & out of your way: side door panel, smoked-acrylic PCI shroud + battery trim cover, PCI mid-fan

*ProTip: WHATEVER YOU DO, work slow & be deliberate w/your actions especially w/sharp objects etc, to help PROTEC your alien ... new case panel parts are becoming hard if not impossible to find these days & it will only continue to get worse: it's every man (& a few ladies) for theirself out there ... u were warned
*ProTip: take an air-duster to your case AND to your front panel's lower air-intake screen (on both sides) --> don't forget about your x2 HDD bay fans either, they're easy to remove-replace & air-dust if desired --> blow the PSU fan out too !!!

1) Yes I did plug-in the factory R5 white alien JST FrntPnl & USB2.0 cable pair I'd bought, yet didn't discuss them on purpose ... 1st I want to show u up-front a way to live w/out their need (or cost) & so defeat this EvilAlienTech outright, yes? Yes. That's what I do. I've showed u a way to avoid, but will also show a way to use those factory cables later as I have, but the fact is:

  • the alien JST USB2.0 cable was SUPPOSED to plug directly into Jeremy's MIO 5x5 USB MB_1 header later on & work -why?-
  • Theory said that the newer R5 FIO (Front I/O) AlienF/X board ALSO has its own USB2.0 header -but it didn't matter- & I couldn't know that at the time, I was too busy installing things
As I said, the ONLY point of interest about this R5 board are the white alien headers so we'll puzzle over them together shortly & also try to get your 3rd exterior Top I/O USB x1 port (aka USB2 5wire) back in the game so stay tuned for more photos & advice --> help is on the way

2) A stealthier-pricier $6.50 USB 3.0-to-2.0 adaptor was suggested earlier which is a direct plug-in to the R5 3.0 ports & I suggested u buy & try a pair of them for your MIO USB3 & Top I/O USB1 x2 ports where the $3.50 type requires u might 'tuck away' the 5x5 connexions at the PCI fan area as I did. 2-3 of your unused HDD SATA Data cables can 'tuck away' there also if cable cleanliness suits u

IMG_2098 - CopyA.jpg

3) I mistakenly labeled the case Rear I/O trim plate as a Top I/O plate in one of the pics
*ProTip: when buying a new 'refurb' 'openbox' or used R3-R7 alienboard, keep an eye out that it comes w/ the rear I/O trim plate. If not, they're sometimes seen on eBay ~$15& they all appear to be the same cut-out design regardless the R-version (ie u could stick an R6 plate on your case for say an R3/4 board, at least til u source the 'correct' one if it matters by then)

Ok. To re-cap our progress thus far ~$10 in basic cables has afforded us a Power On-Off Switch, MIO & Top I/O USB both have their USB-links via a simple 3.0-to-2.0 adaptor & we've toasted the need for EVIL Alien JST headers connectors cables etc, thus, System Powa can turn on, MIO & top USB can turn on & that's a wrap so let's see what happens next with our NVME-SSD-HDD drives once we install Win10 & go get our free upgrade to Win11 ... & oh ... install CmndCntr software on this close-cousin but still just a non-R1 mthrbrd that needs a reach-around for it to work

Afterall, we'll never win this Proprietary Ancient AlienTech War unless & until the CmndCntr installs, case LED lights return & can change colors on our whim

________________
Area of (No) Concern (Yet): Windows 11
Command Center + AlienF/X Seem Ok

Using the original NVME drive that came w/ the R5 mthrbrd, I restored the W10 Pro image back to day zero via the factory Dellware recovery partition

  • I cloned that Day Zero image onto a small spinner drive tucked away in one of the x6 HDD bays
  • W/a safety net now, I installed CmndCntr at some point & then fully updated NVME to W10 22H2 & after some tweaks I then cloned that again on another NVME Drive #2 (using a x4 PCI-E adaptor)
  • Drive #2 did the inplace upgrade to W11 & I was glad to experience a working CmndCntr 2.8.11 on the other side (*eventually*) but was unglad to experience W11 itself *yikes*
  • From there I made other drive clones of W10 + W11 on basic HDD/SDD drives held in the x6 HDD bays. For me? x3 top bays are W11 images, x3 bottom bays are W10 images

*ProTip: your bottom x3 HDD bays get the best x2 HDD FANS-cooling action while R5 mthrbd only supports up to x4 SATA data cables, so when u go to plug-in R1's internal SATA data cables to powa up some bays (labled 1-6) plan accordingly

Sit-Rep: MIO USB 3.0-to-2.0 adaptor eventually came through for us & CmndCntr 2.8.11 works fine w/either Win10/11 OS, for now ...

Power is on, MIO + x2 Top USB ports are on, Win10/11 are installed, we look good so far, but, if landing this UFO means ANYTHING, it means install (proprietary alien) CmndCntr software & win this War against the R5 board once & for all -rather- win against EVERY board in the universe, human, alien or otherwise, so let's do that next, AFTER I say one final word on the MIO issue I saw here
_________________
Area of Concern 1
MIO Board Needs 3.0 to 2.0 Adaptor
Do your Top I/O USB ports need one too?
Yes. And no. And Maybe

(It's complicated but solved on all three fronts, coming soon)

The Main Attraction of R1 is its drop-dead gorgeous looks & the cherry-on-top --> again-trend-setting AlienF/X LED lights run by the Master I/O LED vent & cooling daughterboard. MIO is a simple USB2.0 Comms device that's reliably worked w/ just about every mthrbrd make, model & Windows OS for over a decade now & I'll just say it again for those in back: the ONLY way to interface your MIO w/ this alienboard is to plug your MIO USB cable into an R5 mthrbrd USB3.0 port using the inexpensive USB 3.0 to 2.0 adaptor from earlier:

  • MIO USB2.0 cable is a typical double-ended DuPont 5x5 labeled as USB3 at the mthrbrd end & as MB1 at the MIO end
  • TYPICALLY, we find USB3 & plug it into a retail aftrmrkt mthrbrd USB2.0 header, & next ALSO ensure that the board end-proper of the cable (MB1) is seated fully into MIO's sweet-spot the MB_1 USB header (not to be confused w/ the adjacent FlexBay MediaCard header, yes? Yes)

For this R5 board we're instead going to buy & use a typical USB 3.0-to-2.0 adaptor, plug MIO USB3 into the adaptor's male-pin'd 5x5 & then plug the adaptor 20pin end into a R5 3.0 port

-Settled Science-

The question I had was why? Simply put: R5 mthrbrd's pair of USB2.0 alien JST headers proved worthless & reliably REFUSED to recognize R1 MIO board & install its filter driver REGARDLESS of the intense trouble-shooting I did here, kitchen sink & all. I mean ALL. I was all-in on this test-of-wills but even Brute-Force was null & void --> In Device Manager > USB > Events read the sorry never-ending-loop of sad news:
⦁ Device USB\VID_XXXXX was not migrated due to partial or ambiguous match

Install AWCC CmndCntr Software On non-R1 Mthrbrd

CmndCntr v2.8.9 always installed onto non-R1 mthrbrds w/ out issue, so try it out ...

The latest / last v2.8.11 has always thrown a 'software block' on non-R1 boards, but a simple work-around was invented by forum member & fellow Grey AVicD (& later an even more simpler way by dude in the old AlienOwners forum), both methods shown below
NEW BiosMod 1.JPG

Above, solving the software block is as fast as a minute & as easy as 1st temporarily changing two values in the Registry (blue / green) & then immediately install CmndCntr v2.8.11

Method #1 = Manually Modify Two Values:
1) In Windows search box, type REG & open Registry Editor
2) In RegEdit, navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_ MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\BIOS
3) Find & right-clik on BaseBoardProduct > click MODIFY > DELETE (or back space) the entry & insert new value 0XDJ4C (= A51 R1 mthrbrd part#)
4) Find & right-clik on SystemProduct > click MODIFY > DELETE (or back space) the entry & insert new value Area 51
5) Now launch & install Command Center 2.8.11 --> restart PC

This simple trick works to get AlienF/X software installed on all non-R1 mthrbrds + this temporary change in the registry disappears after the restart, so no consequences or worries over this ephemeral registry tweak

Most important, the above advice is all u need for MIO board to pass its data through a USB3.0 adaptor & for the CmndCntr software to install ... & work

Press Powa On Switch:
Your AF/X LEDs should light up again & change colors

Area of Concern 2B: Fix AWCC CmndCntr Software After Install?

(we'll head back to RegEdit to look for & perhaps fix a bogus single-line-item entry & quickly easily solve the minor issue in regedit that may've materialized during the software install for reasons we can dismiss but I'd love to speculate about, but it's a solved issue now that I've both heard about & seen here myself lately, so my fix = your fix) ... see ya soon

Now we know (not all of it, just the two passwords from earlier) ... but you're welcome to go old-school & Export &/or Import the raw R1 BIOS.Reg file for use to Jedi Mind-Trick the Alien Install BOT

Method #2 above is what I'll call semi-fast (~2 minutes of time > save then later load the .Reg file) it's been both an urban-legend + a tried-&-true Top Secret / Majik Eyes Only hack for years now that simply involves 'Exporting' / Saving your original 51 R1 Bios.Reg file from RegEdit & then patching (Importing it) as a full file BACK INTO the new retail etc (non-R1) mthrbrd's registry & pow ... still just a super easy, fast enough & consequence-free Majik Ingredient

Do u already have a 51 R1 BIOS.Reg file saved? --> see 1a/2a below if u forgot what to do w/ it

*Note: Method #1 earlier negates the need to carry out Method #2 now or later but If u do not have your own 51 R1 BIOS.Reg file & wish to make an old-skool copy then please do so BEFORE you turn off & remove your original x58 R1 mthrbrd before it makes its final appearance in your Alien, & then see steps 1/2 below (Your R1BIOS.Reg file will be saved & can be used on your new aftrmrkt board later) & then move down to 1a/2a to see how to use it

Takes longer to type & read the how-to than to employ it. Steps are:

1st Make & Save 51 R1 BIOS.Reg File
1) Open Registry Editor & navigate to > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\BIOS
2) Click File (upper left) > Click EXPORT > See Dialogue Box pop-up > name it (Ex. A51 BIOS.REG) & save it as your original .Reg file for use w/ new mthrbrds, step 1a

Prep for CmndCntr: Import A51BIOS.Reg File Into Retail AftrMrkt Board's Registry

(Re-browse the pic above called Method #2, if need be)

1a) After your new mthrbrd's installed & running & you're ready to install CmndCntr software, basically REPEAT steps 1/2 (as seen up in Method #1) by opening RegEdit > HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DESCRIPTION\System\BIOS

2a) Click File (upper left) > Click IMPORT > locate your A51BIOS.Reg file u saved from earlier & load it into the registry --> your values will now look like those in the (green) AFTER section

*Note: your R1 OEM value may say BaseProduct = 0J560M

  • If so fine, it's the original LimeGrn & PPL v1 alienboard part# & is ...
  • '... an older code Sir, but check's out ... shall I hold them Sir?' ... no leave them to me

0J560M is an equally valid password ... use it ... Install CmndCntr 2.8.11 ... restart PC

Is MIO Alive, Dead, or Playing Possum?
Using AFXTester.exe

CaptureAFXTester.JPG

Find AFXTester & launch it: working MIOs show up in Board Information while 'dead' MIOs show as No Board Detected

Dead MIO's usually mean no 10pin power from PSU -or- the double-ended MIO USB2.0 cable (MB1 + USB_3) isn't attached to the mthrbrd 2.0 header, not attached to MIO itself ... or both (lol) ... so check its USB cable's 5x5 connector at both ends ...

Of course, for R5 alienboards we're using a mandatory USB3.0 to 2.0 adaptor, so check the ends of MIO USB2.0 cable at both the upper 3.0 adaptor end (USB_3) & lower MIO end (MB1)

Rarely does a no exterior case LEDs pan out to be more than MIO's PSU 10pin power was disconnected or USB data cable wasn't fully connected at both ends; however, section 2B above was dedicated to solving this 'other' no case LEDs issue that's been going around lately where AF/X throws an InCompatible Device/Theme error because of the bogus UnSupported Model entry in RegEdit that landed there during install & is easily solved after install

Fix AWCC CmndCntr Software After Install ???
Thermals & Venting will look OK ... but

AFX Error.JPG

AF/X tosses an error = NOT COMPATIBLE ???
-Error Solved-

1) The Error box ABOVE = device/theme incompatible , smile & casually click ok:

  • The GUI below will display > find the yellow caution symbol ('Unsupported' chassis / mouse' icon) in upper-right & click it

AFX - Copy.jpg

2) Per aAove, either a new blank-screen or TactX Mouse / KB will appear here > now CLIK on the R1 Chassis icon above it (Green +)

AFXc.jpg

3) New dialogue box (lol) says 'device not included in current theme. Add to current theme?', click yes & your R1 beauty-of-a desktop should now show as below, all staged & lighted-up, ready to SuperNova & get all Majik'd up

AFXe.JPG

... AWCC's all fixed, all ready for use in Win10/11 ... until u restart the PC that is, heh ... then it'll come right back, so we're not done here just yet ... so go quickly sprinkle this Majik Ingredient into RegEdit

1) Exit / close the CmndCntr app for now & head back to RegEdit

Why: the AFX Incompatible Error seen earlier is a sure sign the Registry itself is SUS after the initial install (this is a recent issue I'd heard about but also saw here myself when working w/ this R5 alienboard on its very 1st install) ... these are my personal ERROR / FIX screenshots afterall. I suspect it has to do w/ newer mthrbrds & newer Win10/11 software builds when using this older W7-era CmndCntr ... harkens back I think to that single-option 'is this an AurR4' question at mid-install but whether yes or no it's EZ to fix this in a few cliks

AFX Reg B4 After.jpg

1) Per photo > Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Alienware\Alienware AlienFX
2) Find & right clik on Model > clik MODIFY > DELETE (or back space) the entry (Unsupported) & insert new value = Area51ALX

And I luv it too: the registry password fix ...

the Majik Ingredient

Is, say it, Area 51ALX

The Legend

That's it ... re-launch / open your CmndCntr & your desktop should be there ready to test & change case LED colors w/your new mthrbrd & survive every restart all the live-long day

While installing Cmnd Cntr software successfully on your non-R1 mthrbrd's still fresh in your mind, one more refresher photo is below before I move the discussion forward to the R5 mthrbrd

Below is my retail MSI x99 MthrBrd OEM BIOS entry page (left). Method #1 says to enter two new values, thus when u look at the b4 & after, no other OEM entry changed. For Method #2 Old Skool, ALL OEM entries change into R1 OEM entries, got it? Thus a screencapture of what your BIOS page may look like after you manually perform the changes ... either method is a 2minute or less affair you can practive at any time, consequence-free since the changes there disappear after a restart. Best of luck

Above are the USB cable part #'s + Front Panel 0NX92

There are two factory USB cable types:
⦁ W4J5H single 5x5 9wire USB connector (shown above)
⦁ 27J7M Y-split 5x5 USB1 (5wire) + USB2 (4wire) dual-connex, each plug into a USB header (blw)

WEIRD R4 USB PAIR.jpg

If buying a USB cable I'd avoid the Y-split type above in favor of the single type, if u have a choice

I'll now talk about the woozles in the room: those R5 mthrbrd white mini JST type headers & connectors above, not normally seen or dealt with by the average consoomer. The Creator chose these ... & for what exactly? ... to swap block & otherwise confound confuse & discourage older 51 R2 owners mostly? ... make a few bucks off us in dumb cables? That & more? I guess

My R5 parts list included the 0NX92 FP + W4J5H USB cable (which I'm using after a wiring adaptor mod) but I've also solved how to abandon their need & cost which I'll explain in follow-up Sections 3B / 3C

While waiting for R5 parts delivery I'd chatted w/Dell Spare Parts & as of today these alien JST cables aren't even in stock ... LOL

Fine with me since I didn't exactly need them

But they aren't making any money off the public either

So what possible purpose do they serve on a day like today to me consoomer & they Creator?

Forget the petty-dillema these cables no longer represent since we don't even need them, that's settled science -but even if u did wish to use them u can't even buy, so, the final mystery for me here is the physical R5 MthrBrd USB2.0 header itself which FAILED in Device Managr after I plugged my MIO board into each, so the header as an electrical device itself is as SUS as its cables that aren't even for sale

While In DevcMngr, MIO board was registered as a Generic USB Hub only, it didn't 'migrate', why didn't it migrate & have its driver load?

As a test, I took my R5 x299 hard drive, powered it up through my retail x99 MSI board, and?, the x299 HDD saw & loaded the MIO Filter Driver so it wasn't a software issue afoot on the x299 drive, it was a mthrbrd issue? R5 N4R4N BIOS issue? What?

k1vbz4bc5tr61.jpg

My only clue was, I felt forced to try a clean W10 install & after the chipset installed I tried the MIO board & I got an odd warning twice (above) & that was the 1st & last time I saw that warning regardless of working w/the PC over several days. Weak power to the USB header? Really?

Who cares, not me, not anymore. It's just, the Aliens, the Creator does so well in most other areas that especially this area I'm forced to ask: really guys? ... really? Couldn't just tell MSI to make a normal board? Went out of your way to miniature these & for what? Pffffff

Yeah, well, I'll discuss 1st how to easily ditch these cables since their cost, overall length & current unavailability makes them less desirable than normal basic substitute adaptors that are way shorter, are available, available for less w/ virtually no mods required. Of course I'll fill you in on how I got mine to work, but they needed a mod & so will yours = xtra time + $ to integrate etc

Honestly, the sole reason I wanted the W4J5H USB alien cable was because it's 5x5 DuPont end is designed to plug directly into MIO USB header MB_1 ... that failed, the mthrbrd failed to work & when it did it cost me an R5 USB3.0 port as a result, but I've just found a way that it won't have to cost u a 3.0port too

I'm about to show u how to use R5's USB1 & USB2 white alien headers to power all three, yes all three of your Top I/O external ports, as well as snuggly tapping into the white FrntPnl so u can continue to use your top exterior Pwr On-Off button in, all in just seconds, so stay tuned for more after this commercial break

The fraternal twin USB2.0 JST cable will be mentioned here also, but whether you'll own them, buy & try, or hit the eject button & pass on them (as I suggest), I've explored & will discuss how to use or discard their use & I'll offer you a factory-made substitute part + the DIY mod solutions I did here during righteous battle

R5 USB2.0 cable looks identical but grew 3", so 27" inch 700mm

why u never need this factory cable is happening Right Here Right Now

Forget 0NX92 & Buy This Cable Type

*ProTip: buy x3 & solve all top exterior Pwr On-Off + USB1/2 Top I/O x3 USB needs

Lenovo B25-IB250MH Mini-USB 9Pin 2.0 Female 2.54 Male.jpg

Generally, a 2.0mm to 2.54mm female to male 9pin 10pin 5x5 extension adaptor

MicroSataCables USA | Far East 1 | Far East 2

Next to hand-made MIO 10pin AftrMrkt PSU Swap power cable or AIO CPU Cooler Swap 5pin-to-3pin adaptor, this is currently the only other hardware upgrade 'specialty' cable I know of that your R1 may ever need & there they are, they exist ... if they didn't I was literally yesterday trying to inventing it

One look at that adaptor seems to need no explanation so I'm surprised the time it took to 'talk further' about this variety & here it comes, the observations

1) At 4- 6" 100-150mm they're far stealthier than the R5 factory 24-27" 600-700mm FP/USB cables
2) The sheer beauty is apparent: mini-2.0 end plugs directly & snuggly, SNUGGLY I SAY, into the R5 white alien FrntPnl header while the male-pins end plugs directly into your R1 JFP1 FrntPnl 5x5 connector (*w/a fast hole-poke mod) which then renders your top exterior Pwr On-Off Switch usable again

*ProTip: at heart those are USB extension adaptors but easily 'convert' for use as a FrntPnl On-Off Switch adaptor by simply taking a needle to your JFP1 5x5 black DuPont connector & poke a hole through its pin10 which is now blocked. Doing so allows all the male pins to slide in ready-for-use -&- it has a 1-to-1 wiring so it's already factory setup perfect to double as both a USB or a FrntPnl extension. Poke a hole into JFP1 & use it

*ProTip: Section 3B will discuss the R5 factory USB2.0 cable where you'll see these again, but to save time?, now u know that the advice is to also buy x2 more of these adaptors because they'll qwickly & easily solve your ability to plug (adapt) your USB1 + USB2 5x5 connex/cables etc into R5 mthrbrd's USB1 + USB2 white alien headers whereby your triple top USB2.0 external x3 ports will all go live & ready-for-use ...

*Petty Modding Tools Required: Needle + Razorblade
A needle to poke a hole into JFP1 pin10 & a razorblade or razorknife utility blade etc, because note that the upper black variety has a tiny plastic position notch on it which in 30seconds you'll have that thingy cut off flat so it can plug into the white alien header

I've sourced at least these three adaptors from both the USA & China, you're welcome to source your own. But I'm here to tell ya, your R1 = R3-R7 Swap Project is *finished* after u buy three of these. You can walk away & never look back at the factory R5 white EvilAlienTech cables

*Note*: the R3 R6 R7 AMD TRip alienboards only provide x1 USB header, where the advice is to buy two of these adaptors to serve your FrntPnl + USB2 needs & please buy x2 of the original USB 3.0-to-2.0 adaptor types to serve your MIO + USB2 needs

That's a wrap fellas ... ENJOY

My Factory & Hand-Forged Arsenal

Yesterday I took delivery of what I considered an Experimental Ultimate Weapon known as K888G (below), to be known as the SilverBullet, but today I luckily stumbled onto the true Ultimate Weapon (seen above & advised u buy several); in fact, my plan as of yesterday was to hand-convert K888G into one of those adaptors by simply qwickly easily outfitting it w/ basic DuPont male pin-terminals housed in a DuPont 5x5

yeah. that's still the plan, I'll mod it & use it sooner than u think

(I tend to be the butcher, not the consoomer)

IMG_2097A.jpg

I paid the impossibly low-cost of $3.50/mailed for K888G & they start now at ~$5, but the fact is it's 12" inches 300mm?, & my plan was to cut it in half & convert it into two 6" cables, each will get the micro 2.0 connector-end & then apply basic DuPont male pins housed in 5x5's to the freshly bare ends --> to kill two birds w/ one stone ... where I'll realize two shorter specialty cables delivered for just $3.50 so long as I do the ez mod-work here & for $1 or less in basic PC wiring supplies. When I'm done I'll have a pair of black micro-connector-ends w/ the correct 2.0mm pitch & so a snug-fit, both will be sleeved & at a stealthier 6" length while having the correct R5 alien 'side clips'

An elegant solution indeed if ever there was one that I planned to offer on my eBay seller page by request to those looking for the SilverBullet Cable that solves their R1 = R3-R7 MthrBrd swap. If the Aliens can't cash-in on theirs I was gonna cash-in on mine? Yeah. But that was yesterday & today I discovered by accident the Ultimate Weapon I advised u buy & so less hassle for me here bailing u out
w/ more hand-made cables so, it's a win-win for R1 Nation

And that again is a wrap

____________

Kinda. I look at my Weapons Arsenal photo while I type this section & I'd qwickly like to discuss the few other items u saw up there which I used here during my swap battle against EvilAlienTech headers

Browse that photo again if u like but I'd black-sleeved up a classic 2wire 2pin FrntPnl extension & forged a mini Pwr On-Off Adaptor

THOSE 2pin male type adaptor types served one special purpose: to get away FROM the $3 basic Pwr On-Off switch I'd suggested on day one as an entry-level way to get power on, while these adaptor's get you back TO tapping directly into the R1 JFP1 5x5 FrntPnl connector which allows a direct-connexion into R1's top external Pwr OnOff switch & yes both of those adaptor's worked

Note that one 2pin male is a factory-made basic modding item, while my mini I'd forged

Up last in the wiring group photo is the 4" USB male-male adaptor which currently is helping my USB2 5wire x1 top port go live & back in action

I started out Section 3B above by saying that I'm using the factory R5 white alien cables, I bought some R5 parts & I'm gonna use some R5 parts for now & to do so, I'm currently using the 4" USB + mini-2pin male FrntPnl adaptor, see below --> they're temporary parts until I mod K888G into substitutes, & you'll see the SilverBullet staged down there as well ... it fits ... as Ace Ventura would say: like a glove

IMG_2104 - Copy.JPG

End thoughts: A google image search earlier & I'd seen a late-2017 forum member's post in the image results, a post which at the time brought the unusual & curious nature of the 51 R-Series white JST header-connector-cable 'dilemma' onto my radar Power switch for A51 R3? & while that post & my replies to it are of no use (to me) anymore to go back & read hunting for clues (all theory & spit-balling back then, good stuff but not The ALX Files, hardly ) ... 5years later I've found myself waging that actual war & doing the actual practice I'd dreamed-up for some guy on some day on some year on some 51 model I didn't even own as a what-if & WWJD etc ... still, 2017's 'help-me' post has me nostalgic today & I know again where & even when that drive in me to defeat this evil alien tech all started & now that it's FINISHED, KingJeremy can sit back & tell you our War Stories from a safe distance ...

Now I don't know about u, but when the Dellware Aliens invade us & COME UP FROM THE GROUND IN TRIAD PODS?, I don't sit in a cellar w/ a case of Peach Schnapps & dig tunnels to New York, I stand & fight back. Urban Legends about how 'they took one down in Japan ... maybe we can take one down here?', yeah brother that was me taking it down

Taking the War to the War When Two Worlds Collided

I'm not exactly done w/ the FrntPnl On-Off how-to yet --> I see it's now a 5year axe to grind w/ these JST alien headers & I plan to grind it w/ other sharp tools u too can fight back with in the event u can't get your hands on the Ultimate Weapon just yet & need a fast cheap fix

I'll be back w/ Section 3B FrntPnl Power On-Off Switch Cont. to explore other basic but obvious ways to get your R1 swap party started w/ 'rudimentary crude but effective' POWA ON tools as a stop-gap til u source & take delivery of what your R1 really needs as advised, but there's no real suspense to the follow-up post since my notes say it's after-fume ways to restore basic electrical order, yet, we fight w/ what we have on-hand or can get our hands on w/ so stay tuned because believe it not? ... ... ...

Today's Section 3B BEGAN w/ an intro to the factory 0NX92 FrntPnl cable that I'm currently using & I never did xplain how I've used it short of a personal modded 2pin adaptor; I exclusively focused on how & maybe even why not to use their alien cables (cost, length, unavailability, 'looks', & why reward them anyhow w/ your $ for this foolishment) ... a shortened show & tell comes next in this continuing R1 = R3-R7 Swap Series, soon followed by 3C & defeating their USB2.0 header cable as if it just wasn't

(narrator: it was)

Both Boyz will be outfitted w/ BitFenix Alchemy 2.0 indi-sleeved PSU case-harness cables: blak set for SeaSonic 1600, blood-red set for Corsair AX1600i, each w/a hand-made MIO 10pin cable + Mind-Meld AIO cooling adaptors, of course. Below I just scored an otherwise new 'open box', $26/shipped (oh my, UPS prolly charged $12.50+ for that ~5Lb box to get it here + eBay took 15% seller fee off the top)(did seller net $5-10 for these?). Thankyou Professor, you're an MJ-12 Legend

Legend has it that an Epic wind-gust hit the east coast yesterday & knocked my juice out twice so I had no electron-POWA to make & post breaking news & developments lastnight on April Fool's Day. But yes true story: for a shining moment I thought Mr Diddy gifted the Ultimate Weapon, a 9980xe in the Blak Box, I really DID think that (the joke was on me, perfect day for it too ... luv it). SkyLake-X 7940 has found a good CPU-Husbandry home here --> all these OEM R5 parts will be put to good use & cherished as the cherries-on-top of this R1 = R5 swap

Above, a few items I used & considered using to get Powa On & USB2 top port in action --> items u may need or wish to use or be curious about are shown for reference. My front headphone jack 'crackles & hisses' I think because the R5 alienboard has a 12pin header, while R1 has a 10pin (hmph)

I'm about to spill a secret right here right now that many the world-over have heard of but only Majestik-12 (AND ABOVE !!!) KNOW IT IS TRUE BECAUSE THEY'VE SEEN IT TO BELIEVE IT. Area-51 is the place -as we all know or think we do- where they're storing the bodies ...

If you have a Pre-Dell or Dellware Area-51 R1-R7? You're in the select few who know it's true: interred inside your Fortress Tall, lurking down in the underground basement of your Area-51 ...

AN ANCIENT ALIEN BODY ... YES

AlienF/X Control Boards (V0 V1 V2.0/2.1)

My R1 & yours has an MIO V1, but if u look dead-center above you'll see that in my R1 I now possess the eqwivalent of a Roswell-style crash-retrieval of the V2.1 FIO 3FFYN Body stored in HANGAR 18 (the 5.25" Drive tray) ... like MJ-12, maybe they don't know what to do w/ these 'things' but mebbe study 'it' while in a cryogenic-state, but, if I need to re-animate it someday I will, oh I will (less it sells 1st heh)

But yes, MIO/FIO (R2-R7 LOGO) LED boards are the only true species of hardware that make our cases special compared to 'normal' 'primitive' human-level tech out there ... it's AlienHardware ... it's an actual alien body stored in the basement of your Area-51 & u have to LOVE THAT

Yes. I cut an inexpensive K888G in half & plan to outfit both bare-ends w/ DuPont males in 5x5 connex, I did one for this swap post & will do another on my own time. It works, of course it does. As I said, if someone somewhere did NOT make this cab'e I'd invent it me-self. 'They' do make it, the Ultimate Weapon, buy yours, buy several & win the swap war etc; otherwise above left is a finished K888G (in the middle of basic MIO 10pin supplies), then the brand new BitFenix Alchemy 24pin ATX mated to a freshly-minted hand-made MIO 10pin PSU swap cabkle, followed by an IRL pic of K888G doing USB top port action

And so concludes this installment. When the winds took my juice out yesterday I was reminded how important POWA is, so 'll be back w/ FrontPanel Powa On-Off tips followed by USB tips but we already know the Ultimate Weapon is all u need ... but stay tuned

Major Correxion: Theoretical Yield & Blast Radius of PWood / PDiddy's gifted OEM R5 Kingston HyperX is DOUBLE ... --> Castle Bravo. I knew -but in a rush- labeled it wrong & it is in fact, get this --> impressive ... most impressive ... x2 16Gb stix = 32JigaWatts of OEM R5 AlienRAM, while the Legend on the BlakMajiK Upgrade Weapon 1080 MSI alien-Aero (where is the bracket? Part#? My R1 & the PCI fan-shelves luv OEM GPU shipping-brackets), oh, yass, the 1080? --> Legend says she's *gulp* a virgin, never 'used' ...

*Thinking Out Loud: On Ult-Weapons & SilverBullets*
3513_s-l1600_jpg-550x0_jpg-550x0.jpg
-Older R1 Swap Forum Pics-

I forgot to mention in the last post that sadly the R5 mthrbrd front panel power on-off header is just 1/2" - 1" away to use, JUST too far for R1's JFP1 5x5 to reach it; in otherwords, I began here using the basic 2pin insulators seen above by backing-out JFP1's PWR & HDD LED + PWRSW pins, slapped on DuPont 2pins, but they wouldn't reach the white header:

Note: I didn't remove the x6 HDD bays smoked-acrylic trim in order to gain every-last millimeter of FP harness slack; maybe yours will reach if u do that, if so?, yeah, back out only pins 6/8 Tan/Blk from the JFP1 5x5 & slap a 2pin on them & plug directly into white header pins 6/8, and though the connexion may be loosey-goosey, it can suffice to restore your top exterior power button as the on-off switch as normal, til u buy what u really need, ok?

Mine wouldn't reach, maybe yours won't either thus it can turn out u need a front panel extension anyways for this swap to work out & the right, purrfect tool for the job is found in the Ultimate Weapon (& SilverBullets, below)

DuPont 5x5? 2pins? It's All Good

C BitFen3.jpg

ProTip: Dell PowerEdge K888G = Buy one get one free
Pro Tip: Buy two get two free

Here me out. In the US these start at ~$5 ea mailed & things fall into place from there

1) R3 R6 R7 AMD TRip board? Buy x1 $5 K888G & convert into a 6" adaptor-pair for Front Panel + USB1, since AMD boards only have that x1 USB micro-JST header to plug into. Regardless, ~$5/mailed gets the starter-cable u need & from there u mod it into a pair of Silver Bullets yourself just like I did here w/ mine using DuPont pointy-ended male pin-tips etc, & see below

2) R4 R5 Intel boards > 10bucks buys x2 K888G > cut each directly in half & find in that pile all the starter-cable you'll need to forge & then wield into x3 6" FrontPanel USB1 USB2 SilverBullets
3) Matériel: DuPont Male pins + DuPont USB 5x5 connex

3A) Counts:
⦁ Male pin-count = approx x9 USB1, x5 USB2, x2 - x6 JFP1 Front Panel, so at minimum x11, up to x20
⦁ DuPont 5x5 = 2 - 3
From there? Add a little heatshrink if u want to re-use the Delta-style braided blak sleeve (& protect the EMI-ground wire + foil etc set for USB1). Afterwards, K888G gives u the correct blak micro-JST 2.0 connex w/ side clips at a 1-800-Unbelievable price & once connected to your alienboard inside your Area-51 desktop they become right-at-home bespoke truly Dellware parts through-&-through ... lovely

4 Trouble Areas & Other Issues You May Encounter

4A Potential xtra cables adaptors xtensions case fans

Sections 1 & 3A-C xplained the what & why for:

1) USB 3.0 to 2.0 adaptor for MIO (x1 minimum) or x2 of those can help get a pair of your Top I/O USB ports back

2) the other cable u need is the Ultimate cable-type, the 2.0mm to 2.54mm (male-pins) adaptor, of which you're advised to buy 1-3 of them, depending on your connecting plan > your desktop type (R1 v R2) > your R3-R7 mthrbrd type (AMD Thread-Rips have x1 USB2.0 white header, Intel has x2 headers)
Whatever else will occur during your swap, these two adaptor-types I spent all this time on help solve all your power on-off, MIO & triple USB 2.0 top port needs & now finally the rest is all down-hill from there. Headed your way later is Section 5 MthrBrd Install, & its section on Cables discusses:

A) the potential need for a CPU 8pin extension (6-8-12" 150-200-300mm)
B) potential to not worry about the PCI-E Augmented GPU power's CPU/EPS 8pin if you're still using the original x58 era R1 1000w 1100w 1200w PSUs
C) potential need for a U.2 cable(s) to interface with & use the R5 U.2 header port(s) for more SSD-type drives, over & above its onboard x1 NVME M.2 slot

Section 5B FAN Headers + CPU AIO Cooling discusses:

A) potential need for extra 92mm 120mm 4pin PWM case fans for better cooling & perhaps to satisfy Karen --> Dellware's fussy ePSA Support Assistant
B) typical need to provide (sleeved) 4pin 3+1 Fan extensions for 3pin 4pin case fans, before or after the swap, given the R5 board's x5 fan headers at left top & bottom, places that R1 case fans may or may not reach, depending

Section 4A above asks u to take note of potential xtra cables adaptors xtensions & case fans which we'll return to later in Section 5

4B Potential Front Audio 'crackling' issue

4B & 4C NVME Speeds?, below are 'potential' areas because I can't know yet if my alienboard has these issues due to a personal board malfunction here, or those two issues are common to all --> either way, be aware that R5 has what looks like another alien mthrbrd header, this time up it's Audio:

⦁ R1 has an industry standard 9-wire 5x5 Audio cable

⦁ R5 board has an 11-wire 6x6 Audio header-cable pair

⦁ two-pins / wires go unaccounted for which would not matter if the sound was ok, but my front audio crackles & hisses + serious static that disappears when I plug my same headset into the rear jack

I CAN NOT YET FIND a Dell or any other 12pin 6x6 Audio pinout to start out with to help explain the nature of these extra 2wires-pins. Without any testing here or basic knowledge of fixing PC audio in general (this is a 1st for me):

⦁ either my mthrbrd front audio arrived here already fried-out while yours will be fine & sound normal
⦁ R5 6x6 11-wire is another alien header purposely designed to NOT play nice w/ the R2 case especially, but also not w/ any other human's normal 5x5 Audio, not unless or until something's done w/the R5's extra 2wire-pins
⦁ All of the above & yet an EZ soft/hardware fix also exists I'm not aware of ... BE ADVISED

Loli Lenovo SM961 3.11.23.JPG

4C Potential Reduced NVME SSD Rd/Wr Speeds?

I'd bought several older but still brand new, decent, low-cost Samsung SM961 NVME SSD spec'd at 3200Read 1800Write & on my retail MSI x99 & A51 R2 MSI x99 alienboards using CrystalDiskMark, both reliably bench 3300/1550, ok? In this R5, Read drops to 2600-2700 (write = 1500) & I can't figure it out yet, so be advised. Either my board suffers a personal issue -which is what I suspect- or it's common to all, yet, the critical TechPress would've discovered that & said so during their many 2017-18 reviews ... BE ADVISED

4D Karen: (you can't, or can u still say Karen in 'this' community)

Dellware's BIOS-based ePSA Support Assistant / Secretary

What Karen didn't know is that I was the one looking to complain to the Manager ... to the Creator ...

I understood why that old guy probably RageQwit R5 machine for dirt cheap: ePSA Pre-Boot Diagnostic, built-into this board, is ... many things ... some nice, some not so. Think X Machina ... lovely to flirt w/ but leaves u out to dry in the end ... If I never see 'her' launch again I'll be better off

ProTip: she put me in a maniacal boot-loop called: No USB2.0 No USB3.0 No FrontPanel Cables detected (or similar B$) ... I yanked the onboard coin-cell batt, moved the RTC-Jumper to reset BIOS, waited 60secs, un-do > restart > Karen went away ... for now ... that was the only fix I found to ghost her

4D RESERVED > emerging issues (4.5.23 = None ... TBC ???)

5 Doing the MthrBrd Swap

Alienware_Area_51_R5_motherboard - Copy.jpg

Obviously, pull old mthrbrd out (< carefully >) install R5 mthrbrd to your case wall tray... older still-relevant R1 MthrBrd-PSU swap PDFs will attach as 5C

5A Cables:

*Front Panel (11) USB3.0 (20/21) USB2.0 (12 A/B) were discussed earlier above
*24pin ATX (25) = plug n play (=
*CPU 8pin (31) = potential issue w/ length

I'm using a Seasonic 1250W psu w/ 27" 700mm CPU cable, while yours may be the factory CPU cable = 51" long located coming from the top left access hole - the R5 mthrbrd CPU header (31) is in the top center of board & mine BARELY reached - yours may or may not reach the header given the factory routing. If not? -->
⦁ unclip it from the front case mid-sill area w/left hand & pull on it up top w/right hand for slack & live w/the results (note: you may have to remove the smoked acrylic HDD bay trim 1st to buy some cable slack?)
⦁ An alternative is to back the 51" cable out of the top & bottom left access holes & route it inside the case
(note: requires removal of HDD bay trim 1st)
(note: may also include unplugging the top left power & cooling board cable pairs & backing them out of top access hole before CPU 8pin can also back out)
Otherwise purchase a 6-8-12" 150-200-300mm CPU 8pin extension so yours can reach

*GPU PCI-E 8pin Augmented Power (15):
This isn't a PCI-E 6+2 type header, it's a CPU/EPS 8pin & my Seasonic 1250w can power it up after I make it a new (sleeved) cable; if you did a PSU swap w/an aftermarket type, yours probably can also; if you're still on the decade-old factory 1000w 1100w 1200w, you have no provision to power that 8pin port but u can probably get away without powering it, you'll have to see if your system crashes etc before u can find out

SATA PORTS x4 (18/19) --> x4, not x6 like the old dayz:

⦁ Note: R5's onboard NVME SSD + U.2 SSD + PCI-E slots for NVME x4 x16 adaptor cards lessens your need for multiple other drives in your x6 HDD Bays, but 1 - 4 more drives can go live in your bays when needed (6 total drives store there anyways)
1st, when u open your right-side door panel you'll see that the x6 HDD drive bays are labeled on the smoked-acrylic from top-bottom left-right as bays:
4 5 6
1 2 3
R5 mthrbrd provides x4 SATA ports while your HDD bay can hold x6 drives, so now find your interior SATA data cable pairs which are labeled SATA 1 2, 3 4, 5 6 & plug them in based on which HDD bays u plan to use

Here I'm using a DVD BluRay so I've plugged in x3 SATA Data cables for bays 2 3 6 since they're the 'closest' for me to easily reach right now (my Alien resides by the wall)
⦁ Note that bottom bays 1 & 2 get the best HDD fans action, while bay 3 does better than top bays 4 5 6
⦁ If u need a CD/DVD, plug-in its SATA cable & 1 2 or 3 drive bay data cables

U.2 SSD Drives (22):
You'll need a factory cable or two (Find & Post Your Part #'s) or a standard aftermarket cable(s) to run a drive(s) off the U.2 headers; you might store a U.2 drive(s) in an open CD/DVD 5.25" bay for example (or in your top-most 3.5" floppy bay which may hold a 2.5" size drive also) using a 3.5" to 2.5" SSD drive holder tray enclosure etc

_____________________
5B Fan Headers (1, 16, 29, 30) + CPU Liquid Cooling (32)

x5 R5 mthrbrd fan headers + several more found in R1's MIO + top-left power-cooling board means this section should NOT be fun to type / explain / advise, but here are some Areas For Thought & Planning:

1st just say it: 51 R1's RADIATOR FAN

We successfully installed CmndCntr & now we may want the top Rad-fan(s) to run & be monitored by AWCC software the original good-old fashioned way ... I hear ya ... which means plugging a fan -*any*- case fan actually that we care enough about to both monitor it & do not mind if it runs ~900RPM most of the time as normal

*I run a rear kika$$ 92mm exhast fan off of top cooling board's Sys_Fan1 header = classified reasons
*YOU may be running the, or a, 120mm-type AIO cooler + Rad-Fan (120x38mm server-grade bad a$$ Delta / Nidec 4pin pwm)

Moving on, R5 mthrbrd has x5 Fan headers - x4 are 'monitored' by default (rad-fan 1, pump 32, top 30, pci 16) - but the Bios has a setting that can turn off all 'errors' (ie loss of a fan rpm signal on any given monitored header) at startup, where yes it will throw warnings on x4 headers if no fan (or fan RPM signal *wink* classified / Xperimental stuff here) is attached to those headers, but using your case fan(s), here's the basics:
⦁ Your top left Power-Cooling board - where your original RadFan + AlienCooler now probably plugs into - leave those alone
⦁ USING A FAN EXTENSION Cable: plug your 4pin MIO Fan Cable (ORG X YLW GRN) into R5 fan header (1); try for the shortest 4pin fan extension cable that can help the MIO fan cable reach header (1) is way over on the left mid-board ... afterwards, your MIO will get its Rad-Fan speed signal & relay it up top to your 4pin PWM fan like stock, and, Rad-Fan can report its RPMs in the CmndCntr Thermals page as System Fan like always

AIO Cooling Pump (32): runs at full speed, avoid it? (WHAT?)  Yeah Foo-Fighter that header for no

Top Fan (30) & PCI-E Fan (16) ... ? what to do?

You should have a rear 92mm case fan installed, & honestly your top cooling caddy should have two more fans up there also ... with fan cable extensions, you could power extra Chassis Fans off the otherwise now open x3 fan headers (16, 29, 30)

If you get a Fan Warning on Startup regardless your fan-setup, disable it in the Bios or live with the propmt til u rememy with extra fans etc

Whether you're an Aurora or A51 owner of all vintages, the Dellware forum here & the oldie but a goodie locked (Read Only) forum have had enough mthrbrd / PSU swap material posted over the past decade for anyone to easily find / google, to read & learn from; therefore my R5 post is not another in-depth how-to --> see attached PDF files of other relevant owner mthrbrd/PSU swaps

Welcome ... I'm almost finished ...

R13 14 15.png
{ Researchers at A51 Skunk WorX call those Face Huggerz }

If you've seen the latest Aurora R13 14 15, the Aliens are all-in on proprietary Alien Hardware ... those mthtrbrds will resist attempts to 1st remove & then implant outside the R13-15 exo-skeleton case it's forcefully symbiotic with ... ALL while they sport the new Proprietary EvilAlienTech PowerSupply. Yikes. Eqwally odd-ball alienboard up there was X51 --> they know what they're up to lately & why

24PIN SIZE.jpg

ALL that Xtra Space between the cable-tidy & 5.25" bays intrigues whether the R13-15 oddball might just fit as a practical matter on an R1 wall (*serious here*). A few measurements of that board & R1's Xtra-Terrestrial 'space' starts the conversation off anyways --> As the late great Jim Marrs would say: stick it in your 'Hmph' File

Aurora's weird mthrbrd & PSU looks to me like a sneak-peek into the future A51R8 & what it may look like & so hardware that may never fit, let alone fully work. Time will tell & what we have in the here & now are the 51 R2-R7 ATX + Aurora R10-R12 micro-ATX boards which may be last best hope of installing an OEM alienboard & w/a CPU of some repute into your R1 if u care about using alien products ... if ... (as I said, a 51 R8 may drop from the sky as a totally incrediblly bada$$ case-design but of course it will but mebbe w/ a weird Face-Hugger alienboard Species inside it as I suspect ...). A decade-long+ forum friend & Fellow Grey here once said: 'if u remove the alienboard it's no longer an Alienware'. Make of that what u will as I have. We know aftrmrkt boards of all years / makes / models work in R1 = 'been there done that'. Settled Science. Still. Until we ever see 51R8, those Ancient Alien boards mentioned above currently represent, what?, the 'alien' Xperience We Have v What We Wanted

6A Alienware Themed R1 in 2023? MthrBrd PSU AIO Cooler

Newer Aurora R10-R12 MthrBrds

As micro-ATX boards, they're smol & MAY best be located in Aurora R1-R4 where m-ATX boards belong. If u bag a later Aurora R10 11 12 board w/ a mainstream Intel AMD chip & get it hooked up in your R1, hat's off ... I hear ya ... do I hear 11900k? Cool. Cool. Smokin in the Boyz Room

Those boards DO NOT come w/ a rear I/O shield trim plate (so make your own -see google uTube- or do w/ out one). MIO board would need same USB 3.0 = 2.0 adaptor, x2 USB2.0 top ports too I guess & you'd figure out the front panel on/off switch pinout & could easily go from there but don't qwote me on that -I haven't seen it tried in R1 but understand why it might be, especially if you're still on old X58 Gen 1 it'd be an upgrade, an honest one too- all I know of those boards are they typically relocate into retail DIY desktop cases & seem to satisfy the owner etc ... the fact is, that ePSA Pre-Boot Karen Secretary drove me nuts, of which Aurora should have her in their BIOS also & it's untelling how fussy that mthrbrd-nanny could get when not in an Aurora chassis if not w/ all the right parts etc. I've avoided all R5-R15 discussions over the years & so know about as much as what u know & saw ... still ...

-the Truth Is Out There-

_____________

6B Newer Dellware 850w 1000w 1500w

Way back on a St.Valentina's, King Jeremy was treated to (& probably was) the 1st R1 (& last? lol) owner-inspired recipient of 51 R2's 1500w 800GY PSU (1440w 12v Max) seen in 2015's ALX-Files: A Triad of Power Supply Swaps

I show'd & tell'd it's possible to use the 850/1500w (or newer Aurora 1000w = OK too, yes, OK!) in R1 -if- you provide the correct cables/extensions (hand-made MIO 10pin cable, 24pin ext. cable, account for SATA 6pin cable needs etc); see the Files, those PSUs have a sparse front panel 6pin connector count relative to R1's drive-needs circa 2015, whatever I said back then, but:

⦁ Today's NVME-type drives lessen the need for larger 2.5" SSD / SATA spinner drives = less need now for more SATA 6pins etc, so those Ancient Alien PSUs are more feasible today, more

The FACTS are ...
1) Delta made a quality PSU & JonnyGuru of Corsair vouched for the HuntKey wndor-back-up company who pitched in for some 850w's (though both Delta HuntKey 850's had fan noise issues so they say), but fan issues aside, JGuru vouched for Delta/HuntKey, even ACBell as otherwise a quality & reliable manufacturer since he'd visited them personally for a tour etc & ran the PSU be-all end-all site back in the day

2) As a hobby I make PSU cables so for me that R2 Delta was an easy-ish swap where others may find it a cabling hassle til human-level solutions materialize (ie hire a cable modder when needed). If u have qwestions, I may have answers ...

But yes, R1 is over a decade old by now & comfort can be found in using this newer better A51 / AlienTech PSU custom-designed by the Creator by a qwality brand, if u do the cables up right

6B Alien Liqwid CPU Coolers

AIO.jpg

Stock R1 alien cooler (W550R etc) 120mm radiator is the base entry-level (whimpy) 27mm-wide-RAD type & they're now over a decade old (if yours still works? thank the cooling gods at Asetek: yours DOUBLED its estimated life-span) ... as beginner upgrades I'd paired my Aliens here w/the Aurora R4 120x38mm Rad 01YGW, while Toothless (my Aurora R4) now wears the thickest R3 R6 R7 TRip cooler @49mm rad for over a year now (part# TFGHM or HR6V4), luvs it
⦁ Note: 120 x 48/49mm wide rads CAN work in R1 -if- u swap the rad-fan for a slimmer 25 x 120mm (preferably 4pin PWM) ... this combo barely fits but will fit relative to the top mthrbrd tray/sill area & CPU 8pin header access etc ... tight fit I say!

We do have the R2 K31VH & newer R4/5 NVDDX whimpy 27mm types w/ corporate logo

If you wondered about King Jeremy's cooler, here we Xclusively use Asetek's 570LX 240x38mm rad wearing Alienhead beauty caps pulled from Aur R4 01YGW coolers, the rad-fans are normal 120 x 25mm & 32mm types max

  • I've seen some H20-piped aliens do a 360mm rad as a mod, but, still unsure of the how. Unless u brave that mod, conventiona wisdom says 240x38mm is the best cooler u can ezily install

And did u spy that whopper at bottom? Thank goodness the aliens embarrassed themselves on a Gamers Nexus episode w/ their whimpy cooler: Alien HQ flexxxed & ordered up a now 240mil Weapon from Asetek & now me ii's are set on this Xact Cooler Species for my R1's some day (when prices for new / new open box surplus coolers start to drop in the wild etc). Though AUR R15 240mm cooler (w/ thinner 27mm wide rad) I suspect can work in R1 (w/ or w/ out a working color-changing pump LED remains to be seen) I hope it does work: newer, better, classier looks than what came before -->

6C Are R3-R7 MthrBrds even worth buying & trying

Joshua.jpg
¿¿¿SHALL WE PLAY A GAME ???

Short answer ...

Capture1.JPG

R5 N4R4N $65 (Feb '23) | R5 Case $158 (Jan '23)

Both R5 eBay/US listings above employed new Stealth-Tech to avoid my radar & went for dirt cheap. My initial $118 R5 parts list mathed-out better than the $65/shipped bare mthrbrd, so ok ...
Note: why is the mthrbrd tray included? Won't the R5 case it came out of need a hard-to-find tray now, lol; no rear I/O trim plate is included? --> ProTip: all R3-R7 rear I/O plates are interchangeable & can be had for $15/mailed in a pinch ... ... ...

But that an entire R5 case that just went for just $160? Pffff *Mind-Blown* (Seller lost 15% off the top + paid what?, $65+ to ship it? Seller nets like $70 or less? Yikes ... Just keep it next time for Pete's Sake & fix it up w/ answers in the Dellware Forum !!!) (--> *note to self: set a reserve price on your stuff) ... And as the buyer?, it was literally given away, best deal of the year so far, R5 jackpot ...

In the end & back in the day there were SERIOUS x299 mthrbrds to play with by all makers; those SkyLakeX & newer 9xxx Intel Xtreme chips are now minimum for Win11 so u & your R1 will do way better w/ a retail board & get what u pay for, but, unless u can score your R5 alienboard / parts etc for cheap? Like dirt cheap? My advice? ... Buy retail & stick to simple Chess .... otherwise ... (not us, we made out like upgrade bandits here ... but for u there) R1 = R3-R7 could pan out to be Checkm8? Or ...

A STRANGE GAME.
THE ONLY WINNING MOVE IS NOT TO PLAY

6D Convert 51 R2 into an R3-R7 (???)

Yes. I saw & heard of it done. You WANT the rear I/O plate (any R3-R7 plate will suffice for now). You WANT a USB 3.0 = 2.0 adaptor for your Front I/O FIO AlienF/X board, & an Ultimate Weapon (2.0 = 2.54 adaptor) for your FrontPanel Pwr On-Off etc need. Whether u need a FrontPanel Xtension, USB2.0 Xtension?, they're cheap & you'd only need a short one if at all --> Report Back --> let the forum know the who what when how why

Section se7en's dramatic conclusion to my R1 = R5 Series drops soon ... stay tuned

One time in this forum, I'd refused to upper-case my xs & a mod here came into my post after-the-fact, & ... ? ... hand-curated my post by INDIVUDUALLY substituting their upper-case Xs for my lower-case xs ... weird

X58?, no > x58 .. x99 ... x299, 7940x ... Intel's big BIG X mess w/ me OCD ... my lil xs mess w/ the MODs OCD here? Yeah! Believe it. Hand-changed my lil xs to BIG Xs ...

Here be a big forum x u can't Modify from your bedroom on Michael Dell's Pay

IMG_2278.JPG

- The 13awg Unit -
_______________

x58-era boards, including R1, appear to have Xperienced a flaw where-by the PCI-E slot & GRFX card(s) starved for Powa (back then the cure was the so-called EVGA PowaBoost which dropped Xtra 12volts into your PCI-E slot to feed GRFX POWA etc); the cure on some future boards was the inclusion of a dedicated GPU / PCI-E PWR header & we've seen these on ALL R2-R7 alienboards ... (R1 engineers once bitten = R2-R7 twice shy, luv it)

PDiddy gifted KingJeremy a virgin, no, a VIRGIN GTX 1080 @180watts TDP (a miracle GPU then but Spartan TDP by 2day's standards) .... ohhh ... sli = x2 1080 = 360w? x3 540w? = Yawn

R2 probably saw the 980 / 980Ti? SLI? Trips? Titan? Titans?!!! Aside from the fact the R2 alienboard led the industry by 'spreading-out' the distance between PCI-E slots so GRFX cards can breathe & kool off? (hard lesson-learned on R1 = 5970 / 6990 X-Fire = too close 2gether = meltdown) so they ported-in 'AUGMENTED' PCI-E PWR through the lower right sill's 8pin connect & I don't need it. Maybe a 3090 / 4090 x2 etc these days wants it? But u know what? I don't. Still. R2-R7 PSU case harnesses all provide x8 18awg dedicated PCI-E PWR as a relic, x8 18awg wires = totally ok

So I wanna go out w/a bang here. Instead of upgrading the perfectly fine x8 18awg wire to better x8 16awg? Let's toss TWO 16awg wire-per-slot in there. Yeah. You want Christmas? I'll show u Christmas > not x8 18awg, how about x16 16awg?
Double-the-wires, & ea is thicker

IMG_2283.JPG

That just happened

hand-sleeved 16-wire 16awg PCI-E Augmented POWA

SCROLL UP ... PIC #1? ... that's a 16-wire 16awg BEAST

Now 'Folklore' (past-tense) in the PSU industry & modders space is u CAN NOT jump more than a 16awg + 18awg wire onto a single 16awg PSUpin-terminal

Lutro0, who founded MainFrameCustoms.com, special-ordered a thin-jacket (thin insulation) 16awg wire & u know what? U CAN jump x2 of his 16awg wires onto his, what? special-ordered long-wing PSU pin-terminals (gold-plated or standard, here I've used his Gold) ... so I did that

As SkyloRen (my uTube alias) once said: I'll show u the Dark Side > BlakMajik

Taking advantage of Jeremy's XFX Pro 1250w PSU (made by Seasonic for XFX) & its larger 12pin PCI-e port ... ok N4R4N R2-R7 type boards have a 4x4 8pin CPU/EPS type header for PCI-E PWR (4pins shown) ... the XFX, over 5 pins, I DUMP DOUBLE THE AMOUNT OF 16AWG Lutro0 wire in there as a Daisy-Chain ... that's correct ... below are 4 pins shown, NOW DOUBLE IT since it is 4X4

I stuffed 8wires into 4 slots but stuffed 16wires into 8 slots (the pic below only represents what happens in 1/2 of the connector) (!!!)

GPU 19WIRE - Copy.jpg

If u scroll back up to my top pic, it's 16 wires, ok?

I used the correct 6x6 12pin for the XFX 1250w, & a classic 4+4 CPU to connect to N4R4N 8pin header

This is a real picture of x2 16awg Lutro0 wire going into Lutro0 16awg gold pins using Lutro0's ratchet crimper (= 4 clicks) = x16 16awgwires dedicated to N4R4N PCI-E Augmented PWR header

1080 nev-ah needed it but gets it, that's how we roll here

Note: the cosmetic COST of this 16awg x 2 mod is the need for heatshrinks ... heatshrink-less mods are available but not this, not this

Below: In a moment of weakness, weakness I say, I gave the KnightFury a basic 8-wire 18awg PCI-E Augmented POWA source from the PSU (I need to go back & make it Prpl 16awg x8), but if u have qwestions about the alienboard PCI-E POWA header, just ask

Order 66: On the Fumes of AfterThought Fumes

A51 R1 has enjoyed an unbrokenline of epic Intel & AMD mthrbrd swap success for all ages types chipsets sockets & for over a decade now ... I know of NO BOARD that refuses to help broadcast & boost-signal R1 AlienF/X case LEDs out into this terrestrial environment or broader space-time universe proper

Jensen Huang - badd nVidia a$$ CEO - in leather blakmajik jaket says: it just worX

... uh huh ... R1 jus worX ...

4856FFFA-02C7-4046-AA63-479BAE3F7388.jpeg

(l) RicsChik & KJ (r) recently did looking-glass picture-windows ... I advised KJ to qwery a shop that could water-jet the door. Yass ...

... happened ...
______________
ProTip: Custom R1 LED Colors

I see Ric'sChik & KJ opted into that pre-set 'pinkish' color. Oh my. Personally? I never liked the pre-set purple color in AlienF/X either & I was glad to found out I could custom-make my own colors, through trial-&-error

Here's a Color Project

I'll tell you how to custom-make & Xperience a pretty color my three aliens blossomed to here here called Cass-Olé Purple Reign ... when u apply it in AlienF/X & name this new theme Lolita & see for yo-self? Your Next Project can be making your own custom-colors & get off of the limited # of pre-set colors ... 16million colors but 12 pre-sets? what? nawww dawg

make your own color

This is simple, it involves opening a color-theme file in WordPad, scan it for alien-color-codes, edit & change them to your human-code, save as a new document (theme), point AlienF/X at your new theme > apply ... pow! New case LED color of your own making, for better or worse. Keep trying til u made your Alien the purrfect color ...

*A pre-set R1 CmndCntr Alien color-wheel color is their 'purple'

Tip: Open AlienF/X & set (select all) your case color to their purple. If u clicked the correct color on their CmndCntr wheel, the wordpad doc calls it FF5000F0)

Their Pre-Set Color has a 'digital' value, I'll call it, as: 5000F0 (FF50000F0)

Cass-Olé Purple Reign = 3000F0 (FF3000F0)

Human-Level-Act: > Change FF5000F0 to FF3000F0

See: My Documents > AlienFX > Themes > open any theme file (.ath) found there (Open With) w/ WordPad > text loads, scroll down till you see:

(before)

1
1
15
<Color1>#FF5000F0
#FFFF9900
0

and change (edit) the "Color 1" code to FF3000F0

(after)
1
1
15
#FF3000F0
#FFFF9900
0

Scroll down through entire wordpad theme / document file & find all FF5000F0 zones & change all to FF3000F0 > clik to save file in Documents / AlienFX/THEMES etc

In CmndCntr > change it to a different -ANY- pre-set theme name > NOW apply new Lolita theme u just created > in your tray icons right clik alienhead to go dark & then go light

After you finish editing, turn the lights off and on, or edit a zone then press apply

Song & a Dance right? Computer Programming ... same thing. Keyboard/mouse, type your instructions, get machine to do your work ...

Below are basic links to find 6-digit alpha-numeric codes u can use to create custom AlienF/X colors, using the instructions above

http://www.color-hex.com/ |  http://www.rapidtables.com/web/color/RGB_Color.htm

Follow the instructions above >  it jus worX

Pw00d? PDiddy? Diddy? He'd bought a spankin braNd new R5 & yeah, look-a-good come unboXing day... you've seen their 7940x Intel, GTx 1080 (w/ out the rear shipping bracket), 2x 16Gb Hyperx 2933 & 2Tb Seag8 spinner stuff get all absorbed into Jeremy for safe-keeping, for the history books man. In fact u saw Pw00d's R5 metamorphose into a handsome fella, right? Piped-Alien? Nice ...

Credit is due above: Frank Azor, prior CEO of Dellware?, I dunno, as a Swan Song or mebbe he heard the public / critical press /  Emperor's voice scolding him --> 'Young Fool. Only now ... at the end ... do u understand' (the POWA of the Dark Side)

Blak Majik

I think Frank's last day as CEO, as Executive Order 66 ...

he made the VRM heatsinks blak too

Yes
That R15 Aurora board now is all-blak ...

Nov 1st 2014 I asked ... 'Alienware: how much more Xciting would Triad be if when the Stork shows up on delivery day & drops off the owner's newest investment at their doorstep - their case comes jumping out of the giftwrap wearing nothing but its birthday suit - like the shiniest of BLAK lacquer MAJIK jewelry boxes' ...

Miami, FLA AlienHQ. Like Sansa Stark:
I'm a slow learner. That's true ... but ... I learn

what I learned is it's time to upgrade to W11

and that Hangar18 is no joke

R5 FIO is Alive n Kickin

SitRep: NVME drive still slow >PDiddy's gifted 'Moar Cores' i9-7940x w/ it's Moar-Xtra PCI-E lanes? Did not help my reputable Samsung SM961 NVME drive out --> benched read STILL = 2600, not 3300 as is normal

  • Front Audio still crakles, will revisit it as the above issue

PSA / FYI: Coin-Cell 2032 RTC Battery & BIOS Setup + Karen
When u replace your alienboard's onboard round coin-cell (watch / key-fob type etc) battery, chances are you CAN but won't swap it out fast enuff à la Indiana Jones (u have 3-5 seconds tp perform batt-swap b4 ALL electrons flee the system) to keep your BIOS settings & mthrbrd un-awares what just happened. If so? Simply powa-up your Alien & it'll do an odd reset where it powas on, then off, then on etc, a good 4-5 times, I think it trains/learns, whatev-ah the brilliant folks at MSI needed it to do & eventually it comes back online > enter BIOS where u discover ALL settings are now Factory Defaults > keep/change your miniscule amount of settings > exit & away u go

ProTip: Karen, Dellware's ePSA Secretary? She & w/ out warning mind u, at one point hounded me over the lack of no FrntPnl, no USB2.0 + USB3.0 cable present (garbage, pure garbage, we were set here) & went away for 10-15 restarts & then bam! came back & in a loop & like GroundHog Day, could not escape, could not boot into me OS ... Hades Hath No Fury ...

Ever see Vanilla Sky? Julie Gianni > 'that' means something David! And off the cliff u go ...

Locked out of me OS. Locked out I say. I escaped her clutches by

  • remove / replace 2032 coin-cell batt for 5min
  • doing the 5 restart dance R5 alienboard performs
  • ain't heard a peep outta her since about 'that' & what 'that' means
  • be advised
