How many SSD slot in a R8?

Hello,

I have an alienware R8. I've added a SSD drive in it so I have 2 SSD drives and one HDD.

How many SSD drives can I have in this computer? If I want to upgrade it further, can I add a hard drive or do I have to find bigger drives?

Thanks in advance for your answer.

Regards,

Cyril

4 SATA drives and 1 M2 drive, but it would depend on what you currently have connected. That's the maximum number of drives that can be connected to the motherboard.

The 4 SATA drives can be SSD or HDD as long as they are SATA. Just have to be aware of the size limitations of the Caddy's as per table below.

Two 2.5-inch hard drives SATA AHCI 6 Gbps Up to 2 TB
One 3.5-inch hard drive SATA AHCI 6 Gbps Up to 1 TB
Two M.2 2242/2260/2280 solid-state drives
  • SATA AHCI 6 Gbps
  • PCIe NVMe up to 32 Gbps
Up to 1 TB
One U.2 drive PCIe NVMe up to 32 Gbps (U.2 drive) Up to 280 GB
One 9.5 mm slim drive for DVD+/-RW drive or Blue-ray Disc. SATA 1.5 Gbps Not applicable

See the picture 9-10-11-12-13:

  1. SATA 6 Gbps drive connector (SATA1)

  2. SATA 6 Gbps drive connector (SATA2)

  3. SATA 6 Gbps drive connector (SATA3)

  4. SATA 6 Gbps drive connector (SATA4)

  5. solid-state drive slot (M.2 SSD)

Just have to make sure you have enough drive bays.

One of those SATA ports may be taken by the optical drive, if so equipped.

Sorry, that does not answer my question.

A picture of the motherboard doesn't help me.

My question was: How many SSD drives can I have in this computer? If I want to upgrade it further, can I add a hard drive or do I have to find bigger drives?

In that configuration your 2 x 2.5" and 1 x 3.5" caddy's will all be in use.

You will still have the M2 slot, unless that is in use for a boot drive.

That's the validated size. Anything past that will work also, just never been officially validated.

If you need large amounts of storage, a NAS might be a better alternative than cramming your PC full of storage devices.

Hello,

No, I haven't used it, so I can use it for an extra disk. But then, as far as I understand, it must be 1 TB max, right?

Hello,

I haven't thought of that. You might be right.

Thank you very much.
