[HDR] ALIENWARE 34 CURVED QD-OLED GAMING MONITOR - AW3423DWF

New monitor arrived, amazing. Just wnated to check with someone who has HDR experience, when I have the smart HDR set to desktop it seems a tiny bit brighter then when I have Smart HDR peak 1000 selected (Not much in it). Just wondered if someone could explain?

Different profile, different brightness settings, different EOTF curve.

Neither are following any standard.

The only setting that follows a standard is HDR400 True Black (Display HDR True Black).

VESA certification

  • Peak luminance of 400 cd/m2
  • Brings permissible black level down to 0.0005 cd/m2 – the lowest level that can be effectively measured with industry-standard colorimeters
  • Provides up to 50X greater dynamic range and 4X improvement in rise time compared to DisplayHDR 1000

In my opinion, it's the only HDR mode you should use on this monitor unless you have a hardware calibrator and are able to properly calibrate your profile.

Note: HDR Peak 1000 is not the same as DisplayHDR 1000.

This monitor is not listed as DisplayHDR certified. DisplayHDR and therefore it's not certified.

Like I mentioned before, pay close attention to the naming schemes and when in doubt check the VESA database to verify certification.

Only VESA certified products follow the VESA standard. The rest is marketing and unknown what standard profile they are calibrated in.

Also, a tip for this monitor: I would highly recommend to turn off all desktop icons on your monitor, to prevent burn-in. I recently had to exchange mine due to icon burn-in.

It does burn in static images like icons and taskbars, regardless of what the advertising says.

It's an expensive monitor, worth taking extra care off.

Gotcha that makes sense, appreciate the comphrensive reply. So there's nothing to be worried about and shouldnt mean it should be essentially brighter. It's essentially just a different curve with different settings?

@tomrayhorton Yes. When you use some of the other modes you will notice certain settings are locked out, to prevent you adjusting them. This is on purpose.

If you want settings unlocked you have to select Custom colors HDR. This will provide full unclamped gamut, as in no profile applied, and unlocks settings like the RGB sliders.

That is the mode you should use if you have a hardware calibrator to calibrate the display to a different standard.
