AW3225QF, always using Dolby Vision HDR mode, #2
Issue solved with firmware version M0B103! You can now toggle Dolby Vision off in the monitor!
Get the firmware update here: https://www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/product-support/product/aw3225qf-monitor/drivers
Thank you so much Dell!
------------------------------------------
Hello, I would like to report a bug with the AW3225QF to the engineering team, to maybe get a future firmware update
At the moment when you're on the latest Nvidia graphics driver, Dolby Vision is always activated; and you're not able to use HDR Peak 1000 (or any other SmartHDR option) -- Dolby Vision is essentially forced on -- forcing us to downgrade to 537.58 waiting for a fix.
More information on the bug can be found here:
Nvidia forums: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/forums/g-sync-monitors/7/535542/aw3225qf-dolby-vision/
Dell forums: https://www.dell.com/community/en/conversations/alienware-desktops/aw3225qf-always-using-dolby-vision-hdr-mode/65b3b535a51f722bfe809f85
We don't want dolby vision on the desktop! We want regular HDR10/HDR Peak 1000 (or whatever setting is set in the Smart HDR menu
So please look into the issue, and if possible ship it to the team responsible for firmware updates -- as being unable to update drivers will eventually make the monitor a brick.
Dolby Vision should not always be engaged, but only when playing back Dolby Vision content. At the very least a firmware update that allows the user to disable dolby vision would be ideal.

so just as any fyi, driver 546.17 also works, been using for weeks now with no issues. I tried latest driver last night and yes it still defaults to dolby vison, however i did notice if i played a game with hdr10 it switched back to hdr1000 for me. But in some games it's still staying in dolby vision. They need fix it so DV only engages for supported content

I agree with this and would love to hear ANYTHING at all from Dell about a fix for this. There are rumors of a firmware "next week", but return windows are closing, and this issue must get resolved. If there was ANY acknowledgement that this is going to be fixed, I would keep this monitor, but without some kind of communication (socials, official, support channels, anything) it is probably going back next week.
Dolby Vision is NOT supported on the desktop, it does not have a DV profile, so why is it being used? This should be an easy fix.

@pcoraci Agree those drivers work, UNTIL you also get a fancy new video card to drive your new fancy new 4K monitor, which will force you to use Nvidia's newest drivers. So while this is a patch for now, once you need new drivers (new card, new game requiring, or other necessary update) this issue comes back.

The temporary work around: switch Smart HDR to Custom Color HDR and it will stay in regular HDR mode.
Another work around is to revert back to Nvidia driver 546.17.
Directly from Nvidia forums: On monitors that support Dolby Vision, when Windows activates HDR, Dolby Vision is automatically enabled. In previous drivers (546.17 and below), we were not passing the HDR metadata correctly in DSC mode so this is why Dolby Vision was not automatically turning on. Users should see the same behavior from competitor graphics cards.
Nvidia forum
I am still not sure why it would pass on Dolby Vision. That official reply seems to imply it's switching to DV because the HDR meta data is telling it to do so and with the newer drivers Nvidia fixed the DSC bug so now it's working "properly".
Could even be a Windows bug of some kind...

Workarounds are helpful sure, but we need SOME kind of communication from Dell on this. Nvidia has made at least a statement through a community rep, but nothing official from Dell yet. Can we at least get that much? My original post on this topic is one of the most viewed in this forum in recent pages, meaning it is something a lot of people are looking for. Why the silence from Dell?

@Munro77 Do you have the Dolby Vision extension installed under Windows?

@Vanadiel No - I don't think anyone looking at this issue have mentioned it. I have never installed / touched dolby vision for Windows before this monitor. I am downloading it now (not searchable within windows store, but via a Windows webpage) to see if it impacts this at all.
OK so those are added. I can now watch Netflix in Edge using Dolby Vision (didn't try before, no idea if that made a difference or not) - but there seems to be no other changes. The AW Monitor switches to Dolby Vision for all Desktop HDR.

@Vanadiel "Custom Color HDR" is extremely inaccurate and has a peak luminance of ~400 nits -- running it is basically shooting yourself in the foot.
imo the only work around atm is to stay on an older driver until dell/nvidia/microsoft work something out

I don't actually mind dolby vision but can we at least get an option to disable the bright <Profanity is never allowed on our Forum. DELL-Admin> logo? Also maybe fix the raised black levels when it's on? It's also too bright on the desktop compared to hdr true black and peak 1000.

It's annoying nonetheless, I'm keeping a closed eye on my return window. They put out a firmware update but nothing about DV. Im still roll back to the old Nvidia driver for me to used peak 1000 in creative mode.
My question is since the old driver works for peak 1000 on Nvidia driver isn't the issues with Nvidia vs Dell?

@R3ddlight The older Nvidia driver does not correctly transfer the DV in the HDR Data stream. Once they fixed this, it now includes the correct DV information in the stream.
That's why I am wondering if it's an actual Windows issue, as in windows sending DV out when the HDR data does not contain DV content?
The older driver only works because DV information is not transferred to the monitor, due to the driver bug.

Asus has announced their PG32UCDM will have Dolby Vision with a toggle on/off. Hoping Dell publicly announces the same by end of week.

@droban
Yea, a DV on/off display side would really solve all our issues.
Even if the display is handling DV properly per spec -- it seems windows/nvidia is still not ready to provide a seamless experience.
Please Dell!
