AW2721D, black screen, image lost while using it
Hello,
I bought the AW2721D 2 weeks ago.
I noticed that the screen randomly looses the image, suddenly the screen goes black (but the screen power is ON). The backlight of the screen stays on. The complete sequence is
Image OK with backlight ON -> No image with backlight ON (you can see it because of IPS glow), and the OSD is not appearing using buttons on the monitor;
When it's happening, the screen does not respond, it's impossible to use the buttons on the monitor to display the OSD to change input or display informations for example.
The only way to get the image back is to turn off the screen, and turn it on again.
I've been experiencing this on:
- Windows 10 1440p (240hz) using a DisplayPort cable while gaming
- MacOS BigSur 1440p (144hz) using HDMI cable while working
The firmware on my screen says it's M0B101.
Do I have a defective unit ? My friend who bought the same screen at the same time on the same reseller (amazon.fr) does not have this issue.
I doubt that the power cord is the reason this is happening because the backlight stays on. Any loss of power would translate in no power at all (no backlight) for a short amount of time. This is not the case for me.

I never had this issue or any other issue with this monitor, but I only use one connection with the displayport cable to connect to my RTX3080 on my Aurora R11.

First off, please ignore my post about the down light issue - it is touch sensitive, so it’s working as expected. I should have read the manual more carefully.
@Franknozly - try tweeting DellCares on Twitter. They were super responsive with my issue, and have already approved a warranty replacement. I’m hoping my next monitor doesn’t have the issue! Good luck.

You are lucky then, same problem here, the monitor suddenly goes into suspend mode and deactivate all osd buttons, i need to unplug dp cable and plug in again and the monitor recovers by himself.
No issues with the cable on other monitors, so already lost on what's happening, th problem seems to dissapear when i disable suspend modes on windows.

@DanBee Nice one. So the monitor was probably overheating at high frequencies and giving up. Glad you got a solution with Dell

I have this monitor dell alienware aw2721d since the end of february 2021 from amazon.ca.
I have those blank screens too , i'm using the display port cable 1.4 on a windows 10 and an nvidia 1080TI.
They appeared randomly , sometime just before i log to my windows 10 the screen will turn black just before i have the chance to enter my login name , sometime it goes black after playing a game or when watching a video on youtube.
I tried with a club3d certified vesa displayport 1.4 cable and , it still happen randomly.
It can be fine for a week and boom for no reason it can do it.
There's no bios at all at the dell site , so for now i'm lost like all of you , i have tried different nvidia drivers , and i can't pinpoint the problem. I have even tried differrent HZ in windows , but still , it happen randomly.
And i remember that the first time i plugged the original display cable port on my nvidia card my monitor was pitch black dark , no image at all , i plugged the cable on another port on the back of the nvidia card to solve it at this time.
So all in all there's something wrong with some of those monitors , since i have it (between 1 and 2 months), i saw the black screen about 6 time's yet , and if i reach a 10 time i will probably ask for a replacement or a refund , i have a 4 year's extended plan from amazon.ca.
And no the cable doesn't change this issue , because it's really certified at the vesa site.
Eco mode at off in the monitor setting doesn't change nothing , nor the settings in windows power options
about turning the display off and no difference in device manager drivers with or without the dell monitor driver.
Sorry about my english.

Hey AOvl - your English is great, no need to apologize! Thanks for sharing your experience.
I'm sad to report that my replacement AW2721D experienced the black screen issue yesterday.
Now I'm trying to decide whether to request a third replacement, or just return the monitor for a full refund. It seems like this problem is widespread enough that I wouldn't be surprised if all AW2721D monitors will eventually experience the issue. I really like this monitor, but I just don't know if I can justify keeping a product that has such a significant defect, especially at such an expensive price point.
For those of you just finding this thread because your monitor is starting to suddenly show the black screen issue, my advise to you is to take a video, post it to youtube, then send a tweet to @Anonymous and @Alienware. Maybe if enough of us do so, Dell will find a way to resolve this problem.

I'm having this issue too. I had the monitor for a month and a half now and it happened twice. Once just browsing and another time during gaming.
I'm using display port cable and with the dell monitor driver installed.

I still have the problem's randomly , and for me it happen alot just after i turn on the computer and the screen to log on my windows 10 and right before i can type my password to enter windows ! BAM ! black screen.
The monitor or the computer are not even hot , so it's very strange !
I have an old acer 144 HZ gsync TN and i don't have any problem's with it , so it's really something with this aw2721D alienware one.
Too many peoples have the same trouble.
I'm asking Dell on how to ask for another model or how to proceed for a refund.

Good luck all , i will reply if i have luck with Dell Technical support.

I’m having this issue as well, but a little more severe. When I alt tab OUT of a game, it goes black for a few seconds, but then acts normally. When I alt tab BACK INTO the game, it freezes and keeps trying to go into stand LBJ and turn back on (power LED keeps changing colors back snd forth) and one by one each of my monitors (3) make a weird image and turn off, and my computer freezes entirely and I have to force it to shutdown. Such bizarre behavior—and I have a background in IT. I can’t figure out what could be causing this.

update: April 23rd, they finally sent me the replacement monitor after 5 weeks of waiting.
The firmware has been updated to M0B102. No such firmware update exists on the dell website.
After using it for a few hours it hasn't had that issue where the monitor turns off and on... but the top left corner of the screen seems to be slightly de-laminating. I can live with that imperfection as long as the monitor stops turning off and on rapidly.

How do I contact support? If this is a defect then I can't believe they are selling this product. I want this fixed or refunded.

FAQ Alienware Monitors: FAQ
DELL support: Support
There should also be a small booklet that came with your machine that will have support and contact information on it.

Same issue, random black screen. Last time it happened It would not go back. Then the monitor died suddenly, no signal what so ever, they are replacing it.

I doubt it will be fixed with a replacement. A replacement monitor came and I'm still having issues. Here's yet another video of it failing horribly and this time I captured the OSD appearing twice on the monitor.
At 41 seconds you can see there's 2 OSD screens displayed, at the top and at the bottom.
Since the OSD does not come from video input and solely part of the monitor system, it is clearly the monitor that is completely broken. You can't blame external systems, cables, or anything on that. The monitor hardware is clearly faulty. And remember, this is already a replacement monitor. It isn't a fluke that there are 8 pages of issues on this forum. It's clearly a widespread issue.
