Aurora R15, intermittent clicking sound when in sleep mode

For a while now, my Aurora R15 will make a single click sound intermittently when in sleep mode (or what's supposed to be sleep mode). Then I can usually hear a fan speed up for a few seconds, then another click and it stops for a while, sometimes minutes, sometimes hours.

I kind of think it's a power relay that's making the sound, but I'm just curious if anyone else has ever had this happen?  And if so, what did you find out?

We have a lab of 14 Alienware R15's and have almost half with the clicking noise. Of those failures we tested all of the fans by stopping them since it almost sounds like a bad bearing but no change.

Ultimately, it ended up being the PSU in the units. According to our escalation with Dell, there is a relay in the power supplies that switches between Eco and Performance, and that device is causing the auditable clicking noise. It doesn't seem to cause any performance issues, at least not for our units.

Once the onsite Dell repair tech switches out the PSU, the clicking goes away. So far, the issue has not been returned on those repaired units.

In the long term, this causes some concern since these towers do not appear to use any standard PSU form factor. So post-warranty repairability might be difficult especially if Dell does not address the underlying issue and the replacement will end up with the same failure.
Wish we could just purchase a known high end PSU to replace these but time will tell.

Hi guys, I am glad that I found the issue that caused the clicking noise in my new Alienware Aurora R16. It was the GPU's wires that obstructed the GPU fan as picture below. I was able to move the wires aside and the noise is now gone. I'll find small zip ties to organize the wires better.

I'm having this issue with my R16 desktop as well. I think the clicking is the abnormal thing - my PC seems to wake up periodically which in and of itself would be fine, but the loud click when it does seems to not be normal.

How do we diagnose this, and should I schedule a service visit? This machine is brand new.

Mine is doing the same thing. R16. Fan turns on, clicking sound, the turns off.

How can we fix this please?

@Sghyde I’m following this issue as well. Brand new R15. I have to select sleep multiple times for it to actually work.

However, approximately every 10 minutes or so, the fans will spin up and the GPU lights will turn on for a few seconds with that “clicking” sound and then return to sleep.

There’s tons of Reddit posts surrounding the issue. It seems the general consensus is to avoid sleep mode as Microsoft has broken it. But the jarring noise is quite unsettling and makes me think it’s a bigger hardware issue.

I’ve just been fully shutting down for now.

Mine is doing as well and I have Sleep mode turned off.  Going to try to disable sleep in the BIOS.  How does Microsoft mess up "Sleep Mode"?  Thats like turning your light switch on your wall from on to off and messing that up, LOL.

Same issue here - I think the click is the power supply kicking on and off, which is quite normal. The thing that isn't normal is that the computer "turns" on and off during sleep mode - strange behavior.

R15 - Same issue.

3 months in owning the PC it started to emit a high-pitched whine. Turned out to be the PSU. After arguing with support they finally agreed to send a new PSU. The high pitch went away.

Now I have the same issue as reported here in these posts. BUT I also have the lights on my GPU (GEFORCE RTX) stay lit.

I am 100% sure it's an issue with our PSUs.  Now if we can get Dell to agree.

Might as well join the party. My XPS 8960 desktop is doing this as well. Very annoying to hear it click at night, and then it also turns on my external hard drive which has its own clicking sounds. Then everything abrupty turns off. Can't be good for the system or hard drives.

Yep. Please help! This is too prevalent to not see any response from Dell

Same here. When my computer goes to sleep it makes a loud clicking noise. I turned off Wake on Lan and it got even worse and started happening more frequently. I have a new Alienware R16, RTX4090, i9 processor, etc.
