Aurora R15, firmware update ok to do from Windows Update?

Alienware Aurora R15

Alienware Aurora R15

Is this ok to do from Windows Update?

I did search it up on this site and there is a 1.8.0 available (Windows Update says 1.7.0)

I just want to know if it's ok to do it from Windows Update. 1.6.0 got installed without issues, but it auto installed from Dell, I didn't use Windows Update there.

Yes, for now you have to move forward.  It's already in motion to update BIOS firmware the moment you restart your machine.  If you do not want Windows to update BIOS firmware in the future, you can disable the capsule update in BIOS settings.

@Chino de Oro Yeah I did it with no issues, I just get easily worried about things. The thought of when a BIOS update fails, the computer is done, is a scary thought.

The confusion often comes up because the terms BIOS and firmware are often used interchangeable when they actually are 2 separate things.

Under an UEFI operating system, like Windows 10 or Windows 11, you have the BIOS, and you have system firmware that is loaded once the UEFI BIOS environment is loaded. The system firmware resides on the SDD/HDD, not the BIOS chip.

To add to the confusion the firmware number can be different from the BIOS number, making it really confusing.

So when Windows update says "firmware", that might be the actual firmware and not a BIOS update.
