Aurora R15, Desktop Gaming PC purchasing/upgrade questions

Hi,

I am looking at buying an Alienware Aurora R15 Gaming PC and would like to know if there is any reason why I should or should not choose an Aurora R15? I currently have an Aurora R7 and am very happy with it. I am also soon to return an XPS 8950 and am needing a modern PC.

Here are the specs:

  • 13thGen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9 13900KF(24-Core, 68MB Total Cache, 3.0GHz
    to 5.8GHz P-Core w/Intel Thermal Velocity Boost)
  • NVIDIA(R) GeForce RTX(TM) 3080, 10GB GDDR6X, LHR
  • 32GB Dual Channel DDR5 (2x 16GB) at 4800MT/s; up to 64GB (additional
    memory sold separately)
  • 1TB NVMe M.2 PCIe SSD (Boot) + 2TB 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s (Storage)
  • Intel(R) Killer Wi-Fi 6E (6 where 6E unavailable) AX 1675, 2x2, 802.11ax, MU- MIMO, Bluetooth 5.2
  • 750W Platinum PSU, Dark, Liquid-Cooled CPU & Clear Side Panel
  • Alienware Aurora R15

Also, here are some additional questions:

  1. For the specs above, if at a later time I wanted a RTX 4090, am I correct in saying that it will fit into the same case and only a higher wattage PSU is needed?
  2. Can Dell install a 1350W Platinum PSU, Light, Alienware Cryo-tech(TM) Edition CPU Liquid
Cooling & Clear Side Panel and a NVIDIA(R) GeForce RTX(TM) 4090, 24GB GDDR6X into the same Alienware Aurora R15 base at a later time if I request an upgrade?
  3. Also, if I wanted to install the parts myself after the end of the warranty is any certification needed after I install the above parts myself?
  4. For the color choice, is there any difference in the Lunar Light and Dark Side choices other than the color? I have done a little research and it seems that the Dark Side color choice has limited lights at the front. Do you know if this is correct and is there a recommended color?

Simon

Depends on what you are planning on doing with it.

1.No, there's often size restrictions inside the case. So OEM 4090, but Dell typically does not sell upgrades. Since you are ordering with a 3080 and a 750 Watt PSU, I am thinking it does not come with the new GPU connector required for a 4000 series card.

2. No, Dell does not offer upgrade services.

3. No, but you would need to get all the parts and Dell typically does not sell these as upgrades.

4. No other choices.

If you are planning on upgrading it later, you are better and cheaper off to get everything you want when you place your order. And again, unless you have specific needs a 4090 and all the other items are rather overkill for the average user.

get the highest wattage psu up front. Difficult to upgrade to high power psu after purchase.  Also get the 4090 up front. Dell does not like to sell high end gpu as retail to customer who already bought pc.  Basically all the high end specs such as top tier gpu, psu, cryotech, clear view side panel etc. are reserved for new customers who buy a complete system
They do not offer upgrade service as a standard business practice.  User can try to buy upgraded gpu/psu from them but at a lower priority on list than new customers
  3. Also, if I wanted to install the parts myself after the end of the warranty is any certification needed after I install the above parts myself?
No certification needed if you can get your hands on such parts.
  4. For the color choice, is there any difference in the Lunar Light and Dark Side choices other than the color? I have done a little research and it seems that the Dark Side color choice has limited lights at the front. Do you know if this is correct and is there a recommended color?  RGB lights are the same.  I am not aware DS has limited color.  Pick one that you like as it is completely personal choice.  Do choose the rear cable cover option because it is more expensive later to buy as a retail part

Re: any reason why I should or should not choose an R15?

this depends on personal preference.  Pro: new case design, better cooling, 4090, 1350w, lots of blings like R13 if you like that sort of thing

con: proprietary nonstandard mb, psu, premium price for newest model/spec if you care about expenditure.  relatively few customer review and short time out in the field.

Just like some but not all R13 buyers who made the decision then regretted later, hard to predict whether you would end up loving R15 or not.
