Aurora R11, swapped CPU air heatsink with liquid cooled, critical error 2000-0714
3080/10700. So I swapped out the CPU air cooler with an official Alienware liquid CPU cooler. Then I get this strange error, 2000-0174 heatsink - heatsink clip not installed - VR Heatsink failure. Funny thing? This version of the Aurora R11 has no heatsinks on the VR. Help?

Well I answered my own question. Dell parts support found me the heatsink. It is only installed with the liquid cooled CPU, not the air. I guess the BIOS requires it. N1C1D is the part number for HTSNK VR CPU R11 125W. I am attempting to buy one from Dell. Anyone trying to upgrade from air to liquid CPU cooling should know that the 0N43JM motherboard (Intel Z490) will want to see BOTH the liquid cooler (on pump header) AND the VR heatsink installed. The rad fan will be plugged into TOP FAN and the CPU FAN header empty. I will post a picture of that heatsink.

The only think I can think of is that you must have VR heatsinks when running liquid cooling? Does the bios throw this error because it sees the PUMP header populated, and the CPU FAN header empty and no VR heatsink installed?

@AuroraHasManyFans Posted some good photos of the VRM heatsink. This was from his post

I'm surprised the error is tied the liquid cooler instead of the cpuid, but I supposed it was easier this way.

Since there is no electronic connection . . . how can the BIOS determine whether or not there is a VRM heatsink installed?

There are circut traces on each end of the heatsink screwdown. You could put a jumper into a screw with wire and eyelets but that means risking burning up the vrms

Speedstep is always on the case! I figured Dell had put some traces on those sockets. Those custom mobos don't miss a thing! I have a heatsink coming to me from Dell, the only one they had, thank goodness! I will do a guide on the swap for people wanting to upgrade from CPU air to CPU liquid with all proper steps and part numbers involved.

Interesting! So if an R11 owner buys the factory CPU liquid cooler (pump connector to "FAN PUMP"; fan connector to "FAN TOP"), he or she must also buy the VRM heatsink (or put in a jumper lol)?
Does this apply to Corsair H60 aftermarket CPU liquid cooler as well? Or the owner in this case can go around the critical error 2000-0174 by plugging the connectors differently (pump receives a SATA power cable from the PSU; fan connector to "FAN CPU")?
Bigger pictures of the VRM heatsink by the way: https://imgur.com/a/bfidagK

@Rythmicone The risk would be if you had a K class CPU, that's when you need the VRM heatsink The locked CPU doesn't need the VRM heatsinks - Dell did sell you the system OEM without a VRM heatsink. Merely upgrading the CPU cooler doesn't add any additional stress to the VRMs. That's why I had said it was interesting that the VRM error was tied to the liquid cooler and not the CPU ID. I suspect the reason (convenience) is that when you purchase a K class CPU, Dell requires that you get the liquid cooler (since the unlocked CPU would need both VRM heatsinks and liquid cooling). Thus, tying VRM heatsinks to liquid coolers solves the issue. But then its overbroad because owners like you with locked CPU's are stuck with the error message that you don't need just because you upgraded your CPU cooling.

Another option for someone with this error message who wanted the VRM heatsinks (I'm not trying to discourage anyone from getting them as they do help and I would have added them to my system if I didn't have them too) would be to add any generic aftermarket VRM heatsink from amazon and fix the break in continuity with something like speedstep had pictured.
