Aurora R11, M.2 spacer

Hello,

So I recently purchased an aurora r11 computer and I wanted to install a m.2 drive. I noticed that there is a m.2 slot but no stand off for the drive to sit on.  Is this normal for it not to be there? Or a mistake? just wondering if I’m missing something.

 Thank you

My understanding is that all you need an "M.2 NVMe screw" to install a 2280 SSD in there.

In the photo you posted you can see the silver standoff below the screw.

I didn't realize they even sold the R11 without an M2 drive already installed!

Normally you'd expect the standoff and screw to be on the board (and they don't typically ship with retail M2 SSDs).  I couldn't say for sure with the R11 though.

The service manual just identifies a single M2 x 2.5 screw for the M2 slot.  Is there a threaded hole in your motherboard that will accept an M2x2.5 screw, or you just have a non-threaded hole there?

@r72019

The board does have a screw and a threaded hole in the board but no stand off so if you put the drive in and slightly screw in the drive in, it bends because of the missing standoff. (At least I mean I assume there was a standoff supposed to be there) in the aurora manual in the instructions it does show a standoff in the photo.

So I contacted Dell via chat and the response I got was due to the fact I did not purchase a SSD at the time of originally placing my purchase they did not provide the spacer or the screw.

I chatted with the sales team and they are able to provide the screw but are unable to provide the spacer at all.. they could not find the spacer in their system I guess.

so I am kind of stuck with not having an M.2 I guess because I had not purchased one i the first place or returning the computer I just purchased.

@Simplestfox Yeah you just need an size M2 thread standoff.  Another option is to buy an m2 nvme pcie adapter like this one for $9.99 which includes a spare standoff (if you don't use the heatsink there are 2 extra standoffs) then you are all set for using both the motherboard M2 slot, and also adding a second M2 pcie nvme drive down the line when you're ready for extra storage.

I don't have this specific adapter though so can't confirm the thread size on the spacers.

If you go for the kit option you can search for M2 thread, size around 2-3mm.  I believe from the reviews the kit linked above would fit.

I had the exact same problem with my r10 because I didn't order the SSD with it which I now realize was a mistake. It's my first pc so we all gotta learn. BUT, I FOUBD A VERY CHEAP AND GOOD SOLUTION! what I did was go to ace and went to where they have the nylon washers. The screw I had for the m2 slot was waay to short with washers under the SSD. So what I did was brought the screw to ace and looked at the nylon screws which are longer. I ended up getting a range of them that looked comparable in thread size size/width. I believe I got an 8-3/4,8-3/8, 10-?? But it was skinny and long. One of them ended up working and I got a little nylon nut from there as well l(doesn't have to be exact match just has to be wide enough for opening ) I went home and hand tightened it and now my SSD fits very snug and the screw can be disassembled with just my hands very easily if need be! I hope this helps you it's caused me such a headache. @Anonymous should really look into how we could get these standoff screws at a low price and fast when the customer needs! I can see this be very discouraging and confusing to new pc people such as myself

This does not work, I tried it. The reason it doesn't work is because the screw for the m2 slot is waaay to short for 2-3 washers which would make it sufficiently leveled.
