Aurora R10, 2 pins missing from cpu cable
I bought an 1000W psu off ebay for the alienware aurora r10 ryzen edition. I’m connecting the plugs and the cpu cable is missing the cables for 2 of the 8 plugs. i’m not too good with pc’s but i think im doing everything right. Is the missing pins the problem?

this is a modular Dell psu which came with a set of proprietary cables. all the cables have 6 pin on psu side.
also ask Vandaniel to upload R10 6 pin power cable DP/N.
as you can see in Dell part description, vendor shipped you a PCIe 8 pin cable (6 pin actually wired). it is not the CPU cable.
for the Dell R5-R8 those proprietary boards have a dedicated GPU_PWR 8 pin socket on board, which some claim must be plugged in before the board can POST. R10 board has got rid of that socket. but this cable might be a left over from legacy models.
I assume you had 550w non modular psu before and are trying to upgrade to 1000w. the 850w/1000w and 1300 w Dell psu are all modular.

If your original PSU was wired the same it will not be an issue. If your original was wired 8 it might be an issue.
I have seen R10 pictures from others with 8 wired up, while others show 6 wired up.
I am theorizing that the 6 PIN is for the 65 Watt CPU models while the 8 PIN is for the higher Watt models.
I had a 3080 in my R10, which at the time was the second highest GPU you could get and it only had 6 wires.
I am thinking it supplies power to the VRM and 75 watts to the PCI-e video card slot.

@Vanadiel My original is wired with 8 pins your correct, so are you saying that’s the problem or is it something else? and if so would i need a higher powered cpu cable

you might be using the modular cable of a Dell modular 1000w psu for multiple models including area 51 XPS aurora. double check the power cable. there should be a dedicated 8 pin CPU power cable for the R10 8 pin CPU power socket. this cable in pic might be an auxiliary gpu power cable not meant for R10. please upload the DP/N of the cable.

if vendor claims it is for R10, can you upload a pic of psu factory label?

The dp/n of the cable is 0MD63V. im almost sure it’s the cable that goes into the cpu slot as none other fit.

Vanadiel had this extensive thread on R10 6 pin

problem with dell AW is they use 4 pin cpu socket from R5-R9 and then came R10 which has a 8 pin cpu socket, yet they continue to use the old psu in stock.
I guess the MD63V is labelled R7 on psu side which is meant for CPU/MB port group on the psu side. whether the 6 pin is a strange Dell hybrid, no one knows. but in order to get proper 8 pin on MB side, the cpu cable must be plugged in two separate ports on psu side (since psu has only 6 pin ports exclusively). I am not even sure this cable exists, although Vanadiel claims he had seen one before. does any one know or have one real cable or pic?

@dot000 I don't know what the power diagram of the motherboard is, but normally an EPS connector is used to supply additional power to the VRM section.
My retail board has 2 additional 8 PIN EPS connectors, and if you only plug in 1 it will work but your CPU power will be capped.
If the original was 8 wire and now you have 6 wire, you can try it and put a CPU under load to see if it works without crashing or limiting the CPU performance.
EPS connectors
And like I was explaining in that extensive thread, there's no such thing as a 6 wire EPS, which means Dell is not following any standards with that specific connector. The standard is 4 or 8, and the fact the motherboard accepts both 8 wire and 6 wire is highly confusing as there's nothing in the service manuals I have ever been able to find about the difference and more importantly the why...

Dell manual never goes into details of its engineering quirks. those are for Dell service technicians, which left the mystery and puzzle to users. I guess most R10 users include the ex speedstep never bothered to look at and realize the 6 pin. hey it worked, so nobody complained or cared much.
I am wondering if there is ever a R8 cable from psu side? we see R6 and R7 cable with 4 and 6 pin on MB side respectively.
