Alpha R2 with Graphics Amplifier no signal on TV

I just got a new Alienware Graphics Amplifier to my 3 year old Alienware Alpha R2 (6400T CPU/8 GB RAM).

I inserted a Nvidia 2070 Super (Zotac) into the Amplifier, it fits nicely. I connected power, HDMI cable to my TV and the graphics cable to the Amplifier. But when I turn it on the TV just shows "no signal". When I remove the connection and plug it back in the Alpha itself the TV display works fine.

When the AGA is connected it shows the white status light, which seems to be a signal of a good connection.

Also I can login blindly to my Alpha and shutdown the machine using Alt-F4. Obviously there is not a lot more that I can do as I do not have a picture.

Also I connect the Amplifier to my TV using the same HDMI cable as I was using on the Alpha R2.

So the cable does work!

Do you have the graphics amp software and the latest drivers?

are you plugging into the HDMI out port?

Before installation I installed the Alienware Graphics Amplifier software, made the necessary updates via Alienware Update and updated both Windows 10 and the Nvidia drivers on my Alpha R2

Are you using the HDMI IN or the HDMI OUT.

When I do not use the Amplifier, I use HDMI out. But when using the AGA I need to connect my TV to the graphics card in the Amplifier.

CMOS BATTERY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED ASWELL AS HDD.

FAILURE OCCURS AFTER 6 TO 7 YEARS DEPENDING ON USE.

Replace those things and your good.l

There is one fact which I forgot to mention:

Sometimes after I reconnect the Amplifier my Alpha R2 Alienware Logo flashes yellow/orange 6 times repeatedly and does not boot. Perhaps somebody knows what the flashing means.

The CMOS battery is not the issue when the Logo flashes 6 times, only when it flashes 5 times its the CMOS battery. I have already read a lot about this. Without the Amplifier my Alpha R2 runs fine.

This guy had the same issue on reddit but he had a fix:

So I made the rookie mistake of leaving my HDMI cable connected to my Alpha R2 instead of the Amplifier. After disconnecting the amplifier and running the HDMI cable to it, booted up again but no display on my TV (amp works fine on my other AW system). Disconnect the amp and the R2 won't boot up now - message is 'reconnect amplifier to ensure stable system operation'. After going back and forward like this for a while, the Alpha starts to gives 6 yellow flashing lights. After a lot of digging I find out this means problem with the video - it is stuck in amplifier mode and won't boot with the onboard GPU. The power drain procedure does not work, you will need to clear the CMOS to get the system back up and running....Unscrew the base of the Alpha and remove the top cover to expose the motherboard. There is a jumper with 6 pins in the corner opposite the CPU cooler. Pins 1 and 2 are covered by default. Remove the jumper cap and cover pins 5 and 6. Plug in the alpha for 10 seconds or so and hit the power button (there will be no response from the system - no lights, fans etc.). Put the jumper cap back covering pins 1 and 2 and reassemble the top and bottom cover. Plug the Alpha back in and normal system operation should resume. Hope this helps someone who ends up in the same predicament as me.

Thanks for googling for me. In fact I have found this reddit "fix" before but hesitated to try it because I always could get rid of the flashing yellow lights.

Now I desperately tried it and the situation has unfortunaltely worsened. Now I cannot even get my USB keyboard light up or get an image without the Amplifier. Before it would just not work with the Amplifier but would work normally as before. Now it seems to be bricked.

Does somebody here know how to get "real" support from Alienware/Dell? I am not in the US btw.

It’s not supposed to brick it. It’s supposed to clear the bios and remove all configurations to it.

Did you turn it off all the way?

because if you connect using the alphas HDMI while using the amp it’s going to be locked in amplifier mode all the time.

Yes, I turned it off all the way, i.e. removed the power plug I still get the RGB light on the Alienhead and the left, but USB seems to be non functional because my keyboard does not light up.

Whatever signal is sent to the port with the cable connected to it.

I tried a few more things with the jumpers, e.g. on the service page they write the normal position would be pins 3-4. After several attempts my Alpha now boots again into Windows, albeit without the AGA. Phew! Neverteless I am back to square 1: As soon as I connect the AGA I get a black screen. Is there any way to switch the different output connectors on the graphics card? I have three DVI and one HDMI connector. How does the card decide to which output it should send the signal?

I now contacted the store where I bought the AGA and asked for the Service ID. Perhaps they can find it for me? If I would get it, could I get official support from DELL?
