XPS 15 9510 (i7-11800H) RAM upgrade: 1.20V vs 1.35V + Dual Ranked vs Single Ranked + XMP
Hi,
I would like to upgrade the RAM. After all the research I have more questions than answers...
I'm really unsure regarding the voltage and the Dual Ranked vs Single Ranked memory. What will actually work?
I would like to get the following RAM
Crucial Ballistix SODIMM 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 Gaming Memory (Black), CL:16-18-18-36, Voltage: 1.35V
Accordingly to the comfortable upgrade list of crucial here this RAM should work. After a bit of Googling, I found this reddit here where the XPS 15 9500 laptop didn't start after the upgrade to the Crucial Ballistix RAM.
Now, I'm a bit nervous to buy that RAM.
Other options are:
Crucial 32GB Kit (2 x 16GB) DDR4-3200 SODIMM, CL: 22, Voltage: 1.20V
You can purchase the Crucial above in Dual Ranked vs Single Ranked. Not sure what is better..
G.SKILL Ripjaws F4-3200C22D 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3200MHz, CL: 22-22-22 1.20V
G.SKILL Ripjaws F4-3200C18D 32GB (2x16GB) DDR4-3200MHz, CL:18-18-18, Voltage: 1.20V -> unavailable
And does XMP play any role here?
Thanks in advance!

You don't have XMP access on this system, so anything that requires it (which quite a bit of performance RAM does), will be problematic.
Since high performance RAM is no advantage in this system (without XMP or memory timing settings, you can't take advantage of it), why not just buy the RAM Crucial recommends:

That sounds good to me. So the Crucial Ballistix RAM doesn't work because of the missing XMP profile in the BIOS of the XPS. It's crazy that Crucial is listing that product in the list for the XPS 9510.
@ejn63 your link shows the DDR4-2666 version. The DELL 9510 needs DDR4-3200 version here
That question boils down to Dual Ranked (CT2K16G4SFD832A) or Single Ranked (CT2K16G4SFRA32A)? Both are in the list "compatible-upgrade-for" from Crucial again.

All else equal, single ranked DIMMs are faster than dual-rank -- though the difference is slight.

Is that true? I think that used to be the case but on the Ryzen (I know this is an Intel CPU) side, the dual rank mem adds significant performance.

I bought new RAM kf432s20ibk2/64, but after installing I'm getting post error 2.5 - ram does not supported. I checked ram configuration and it should be supported! What's wrong?

I would like to upgrade RAM on my new XPS 15 9510 (2021) from 16 to 32 GB.
* Is there a list of compatible RAM anywhere?
* Would CORSAIR VENGEANCE DDR4 CMSX32GX4M2A3200C22 (2X16GB) work? Thats the Spec my favorite Dealer has in stock.

Pretty much all the major manufacturers have a page with a list of compatible rams for your laptop.
Crucial and Kingston for example do. Corsair is the one that doesn't have a compatibility checker for laptops..!
But no, the model you are interested in is not compatible with the 9510, it's been tested a few times in the past.

Hi,
it doesn't work because your RAM supports Intel XMP, which isn't supported by your laptop.
When you shop for your RAM, avoid any module that supports XMP profiles.

you are right, by mistake. Fortunately, I was able to get this RAM back and bought a new one: Crucial 32GB DDR4 SODIMM PC4-25600 CT32G4SFD832A and it works!
