TB16 Firmware update failed
Greetings
I have an XPS 9550 (all software is up to date) and a Dell TB16 dock.
I have two issues:
- Firmware update for DELL TB16 failed using Dell Firmware Update Utility. Update failed while installing Dock NVM and Cable NVM. For these two, the software does not detect the current version.
- Detach of all externals didn't help
- I am using local admin user in windows
- Service tag is not recognized for Dell TB16
Assistance would be very appreciated.
Thank you,
Kasim

Finally, I was able to update the firmware.
1. Uninstalled "Thunderbolt™Software"
2. Run Dell Firmware Update Utility, it complained that Intel Thunderbolt controller driver is missing
3. Installed Intel Thunderbolt controlled driver from Dell website
4. Run Dell Firmware Update Utility without error
Seems that issue was in the Intel Thunderbolt controller driver.
Hope these steps will help somebody!

Try installing below first. I'm not 100% sure it is the solution, but I had the same errors as you have last week and today updated successfully from a different XPS15 (both 9510) which had this installed.
I thought this driver was not needed anymore to download separately, but I looked at the drivers packs of different xps models and not all have it included. If you still got the same error, then also try the usb and audio drivers for the TB16.

Thank you for the suggestion! Unfortunately, it didn't work.

I have the exact same problem, but Dell doesn't provide the Intel Thunderbolt Controlled Driver for my XPS 13 9365. Dell please fix this!

I'm working a TB18DC on some Precision 7530s. After tons of futzing with it, I finally got it to update.
I had to completely uninstall the Thunderbolt drivers and also remove the Thunderbolt software. Rebooted.
I downloaded the oldest Dell TB driver and installed that. Plugged in the dock and it asked me to approve the dock - something newer versions didn't ask. I'm set to no security, and also set the bios settings to what was recommended elsewhere on the site. I pushed the update, and surprisingly, it worked. I pushed the 1.0.10 and 1.0.11 successfully to the dock.
I have 7 total docks, and I have done 2 successfully. I'll be doing the other 5 tomorrow.
I'm thinking the later TB drivers are garbage - though I'm not sure where it breaks. Right now, it works, so I'm sticking with that.
Updating the TB controllers themselves has been a challenge. It seems to think its on revision 62.00 despite there being newer updates since I flashed it. If anyone has any ideas on that, I'm all ears.
Hope that helps!

And remember…I was still getting errors, even installing the old Dell Thunderbolt software…and you have to right-click and “Troubleshoot compatibility” and run the old Thunderbolt software install and the firmware update as WINDOWS 8. Then it worked like a charm!

@calvinguy and @Kasim Kovacevic - I followed both your instructions on my latitude 7300 with tb16 dock and it didn't work. Win8 compatibility run as administrator after removing and manually reinstalling thunderbolt drivers for my laptop.
Any other suggestions?
