Suspend and hibernate issues on XPS 15 9500 on Linux

just wanted to ask if anybody had more luck with suspend to RAM on the XPS 15 9500?

Meanwhile, I've tried the current stable kernel 5.8.4 (https://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/v5.8.4/ ) but without any luck. Basically the same behaviour, the system wouldn't wake up.

Hey,

I am not familiar with the cctk tool you've mentioned. I only found Windows instructions for it. Is there a Linux version of it?

Anyway, I am also back to s2idle mode which works somehow with the stock Ubuntu 20.04 kernel. It so sad that Dell is so unsupportive on that side. With the hours I've spent on this the laptop, which surely isn't cheap, has multiplied its price for me.

Hope to see some that working at some stage soon.

thanks for the link. I'll give the CCTK tool a shot. The Reddit discussion confirms that its not a Ubuntu issue. I was about to try another distro to see if they have a fix for it but it doesn't make sense. Note that I've tried vanilla 5.8.4 without much luck. Hopefully, the Dell folks will pick this up and provide a fix for it rather sooner than later.

This does *not* just happen on Linux. I can reproduce the bug on Windows too with the latest BIOS version v1.4.0.

With the Precision 5550, this happens on Linux (tested on Ubuntu) and Windows with S3 enabled (S0 disabled to allow laptop to actually sleep properly) - i.e. activate S3 Sleep https://superuser.com/a/1539097

cmd prompt> powercfg -a

The following sleep states are available on this system:
Standby (S3)
Hibernate
Hybrid Sleep
Fast Startup

The following sleep states are not available on this system:
Standby (S1)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Standby (S2)
The system firmware does not support this standby state.

Standby (S0 Low Power Idle)

When the laptop sleeps, it exhibits the same problem as it does on Linux. Wakes up to Dell logo / blank screen if preboot behavior is set to disable sign of life.

Confirmed to be BIOS bug. Precision 5550 is a business class laptop - this needs to be fixed ASAP.

@DELL-Jesse L while I do understand that there is "limited support" for specific Linux quirks, this is likely a fundamental issue in the BIOS for this model, since it's affecting every Linux distribution and is not solved by any of the workarounds for previous models.

As Linux compatibility is one of the selling features of Dell laptops (surely it's the reason why we buy them), probably this is something worth escalating/investigating.

Anyway FWIW I reconfirm what has been said in this thread, and that the suggested workarounds here and following the links do not in fact fix the issue.

Running a 5.8 kernel and BIOS 1.4.0 (released a few days ago).

I have similar issues on the XPS 17" 9700.  I press the power button a single time to put the laptop to sleep.  Immediately the screen turns off and after a few seconds so does the keyboard backlight.  All good right?  No.  After I bag it and go somewhere half an hour away, I find that the laptop is hot in my laptop bag and the batter has drained nearly 10%.  Happens over and over.  I don't want to hibernate, because it takes a very long time to get back to working mode.

Also annoying is that there is not indication on the laptop whether it is on or in sleep mode.  Sometimes the light bar in front of the laptop is on (I think when plugged in), but otherwise, you have not clue.  Why not use the front light bar and slowly pulse on and off to indicate sleep mode?  That would be fantastic.

Fantastic laptop... but a few little details definitely take away from the experience.

What @Tolga Balci is describing is s2sleep, not s3 (deep sleep). And yes, it is also pretty broken, drains battery and overheats the machine.

I have exactly the same problem in Ubuntu/PopOS/Archlinux and I tested with Kernels from OEM, to 5.8 to 5.9, so indeed, it seems like a problem that should be address in the BIOS.

Can we have a fix for it, Dell? I would like to love this laptop, but this issue is a complete deal breaker for me and I'm telling all my friends to avoid getting it while this issue is not fixed.

So far they've refused to even acknowledge that this is a problem. They built the laptop for Windows only. The Linux community is so small they don't give a hoot about us.
