error code: 4
My son's computer shut down when he was copying a downloaded program to a CD.
We receive message Windows root\system 32\ntoskrnl.exe. when opening windows. I went to microsoft and it said remove file attributes from boot.ini by typing at ms-dos: Attri -s -r c:\boot.ini.
Then edit the boot.ini file and change the partition number for windows.
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(x)\ ntdir
Also download missing file.
When I attempted to do that I got other error messages including disk error. I ran HD diagnostics and received message HD fail error code 4. I've been told I need a new hard drive. Would downloading a program (maybe with a virus in it) on the computer had damaged the hard drive?

I've had two hard drives fail in the past month. The Seagate was 13 mo old and the Samsung was 12 mo old.
What are the best quality hard drives? I had a gateway for 8 years and compaq for 5 years and neither ever had a hard drive fail (don't know what brand HD they had though).
