Which functions and services can I quit or disable? (not processes...)

Hi!

I lately formatted my XPS M1530 many times, installed Vista Premium 32bit, Sp1 Multilanguage Standalone, and the importants updates pubblished after SP1.

I had no mayor issues, all ok with drivers.

I generally disable all unnecessary processes at startup, and I see that there is a site by Uniblue where I can see what each process do (even if Vista is much clearer about this).

I also generally uninstall all Windows functions which I do not use. In this case I've quit Games, Windows Virtual Meeting Area, Tablet PC Components (this time I left it there, as I suspect that, even if I do not have a Tablet PC, it can be useful for OCR or for recognizing handwritting. Is this so? Or I do not need it at all?), the Internet Printing service, and the Service for syncronize files between two computers. Is this ok?

And I see a few functions which are not installed and I do not know if they can be useful to me. Can someone explain me what are they for?

And finally I disable all services which I will not use. I do it from MSConfig and then I evenctually check in Services. Some of them I see clearly that I can disable them with no problems, as Smart Card (I do not have it), Media Center (I use Media Direct), etc. But some others I do not know what they do, and lately I disabled a service which seemed useless to me but which gave me problems because disabled the audio and I was going mad trying to figure out...

Services are really a lot so I do not feel to ask for a complete explanation, evenctually I would appreciate a link to somewhere else.

But I give you a list of the ones I doubt about, so that maybe you can help me to find out if I can safely disable them. Unfortunately I have Vista in Italian, so some services I should translate them and possibly I would not match the name you are seeing in english.

Here goes a list of the ones which I mostly think to disable if you tell me it is ok:

-"Alerts and registries of performances"

-Security Center

-Ms-Management (in italian it is called "Windows remote management")

-"Host for UPnP devices" (which I read can be a security issue)

-Ready Boost (about this I have a douibt: does it speed up start up even if I do not have any Turbo Memory or SD or Pendrive connected? I have normal 7200rpm HD)

-"Collection of Windows events"

-"Remote system registry" (it says that it allows to make changes to registry remotely, and if it is disabled only local users can make changes. Said in this way, I feel it as a security issue and I want to disable, as I do not see when should I need to remotely change something).

-"Resources pubblishing" (pubblics this pc and its resources on the net. If disabled, the pc could not be seen --- said this way, it seems useful to disable it)

-"Alerts for problems and solutions on Control Panel"

-"Service for problem solving with programs compatibility"

-"Service for segnaling windows errors"

-Windows Connect-Now

-Windows Firewall (I saw lately that in Administation Tool there is an advanced Firewall control panel, and that there are three profiles, domain, private, and pubblic. Disabling the firewallfrom the control panel it is only the pubblic to be disabled. So, I wonder, if I use Comodo, may I disable Windows Firewall? May I disable also the domain and private profiles? And may I completely desactivate the service? Or Comodo or some other program use it?

- Windows Search: what does it do? I disable always Index Server, because I do not actually need it, and it makes more noise with the HD, and more resources. This Windows Search is something coming with SP1 or with one of the later updates... No idea of what is it for.

Well, that's it...

Thanks!

Hmmm,

I answered you, BugBatter, to thank you and tell you that I will check the link from the city, because this dial up connection is a nightmare. But i used a series of @ and other simbols to define my feeling about my dial-up connection, and someone worried about its dignity, and Ideleted the post, alerting me via mail that I violated the rules of this community...  :smileysurprised:

I am conmoved by the fact that these people worry for my dial up connection, but I find a bit exagerated to delet the post. There is a big difference between using a crude language massively, or offend someone, or just saying to some friend in the community that I have a "bip" dial up connection...

(may I say bip?)

It must be my karma, as it is a dejavù with that other forum.

Thanks again!

You're welcome.

Sorry to hear about your posting "adventure". Don't feel bad. The automated filters bug all of us. It's just something we have to deal with. "Bip" will work. :D

Hi BugBatter,

thanks...

Actually (I hope they will not bann me now), I had to change the word for @ characters because of an automatic message, but it was a person who confirmed me by mail that even a series of @ was a violation to community rules.

Personally I do not agree, less than ever in a case where I was talking of my dial up connection :smileyvery-happy:

But that's it, here it ends...:smileywink:
