Microsoft Word - Can't see picture inserted from file

My Microsoft Word was working fine when out of the blue, if I insert a picture from file, I can't see it. I know it gets inserted because:

A. There's an outline around where it should be

B. When I click on it handles appear and

C. If I open the file on a co-workers computer I CAN see the picture

but on my computer it's just solid white inside the box. So it's there but I just can't see it for some reason. I have tried inserting many different pictures including ones that have worked fine and shown up in the past. Anyone know how to correct this?

Thanks

Try changing your View. You might be in a different view and can't see the pictures.

What do you see when you right click in the box

Thanks Mary. I tried every possible view option. No change.

Thanks Schootre. I'm glad you asked because that has changed since the problem started. When I right click, my options are "Cut", "Copy", "Paste", "Show Picture Tool Bar", "Borders and Shading", "Caption" and "Hyperlink". An option that is not available (which always used to be) is "Edit Picture". It's almost as if Word isn't recognizing that it's a picture.

P.S. Another Word problem (mail merge related) started today. It almost seems like my Word program is on the fritz but no other programs are giving me any trouble.

You could try Detect and repair (help menu in Word).

Is your Word part of Office, part of Works or stand alone?

Thanks for responding J. My Word is part of Microsoft Office XP Professional. It came loaded on the computer and they sent me the CD as well. I will try the detect and repair option you mentioned.

JRosenfeld - Your suggestion to run Detect and Repair worked! I love you! I love you! I love you!

FYI: I ran it once without selecting the option "Discard my customized settings and restore default settings" and it didn't make a difference. But then I ran it again selecting this option and it did the job. (The other option, "Restore my shortcuts while repairing", was selected by default both times).

Thank you so much. This has lifted a huge source of stress off of me.

Thanks again to everyone who offered help.

dawn2003,

I owe you a big thank you. Ever since I got this PC, the search in Office apps (Word, Excel, etc.) never worked. I had done numerous detect and repairs, searched the net, asked MVP (Microsoft Most Valuable) experts, all to no avail. Now, following your remark about checking the box 'discard my customized settings' (which I'd never thought of trying before), Detect and repair worked, and search works in all the office apps!.

I did not lose my customised normal.dot and other personal settings in Word either. The only minor down side was that I lost all my accounts information and e mails in Office Outlook. Apparently, selecting detect and repair in Word actually did all the Office programs. However, luckily I had an up to date back up of my emails, and it only took 5 minutes to import those and set up my e mail accounts, so I did not lose anything.

Proves yet again, how useful this board is and how we all help each other so effectively.

J,

Well your response answered my new question of what happened to my email? I figured running repair and detect would only affect  MS Word not other programs as well. The crazy thing is that it even deleted my email account set up. Everything's just totally blank. I see you said you had a current backup of your emails. Can you tell me how to do this so I'll have it in case I ever need to use detect and repair again? Is there any way to retrieve my emails that I've lost. I was totally unprepared for this. MS should put a feature in the detect and repair box that warns the user that their email account will be completely wiped out and to back it up if you don't want to lose them all.

Three ways to back up Outlook data (personal folders)

1. You can install an MS addin,

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=8B081F3A-B7D0-4B16-B8AF-5A6322F4FD01&displaylang=en

Although it's headed Outlook 2003, if you look at the bottom of the page, you see it works for OL2000 and 2002 as well. After installing, you'll find backup as an item in the file menu. You can tell it to remind you every x days (options button).

2. Alternatively, when you back up data etc. in future include outlook.pst, which is in

C:\Documents and Settings\yourusername\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook

(hidden folder, so have show hidden files and folders checked in Windows Explorer, Tools, folder options, view tab)

3. You can also export all or parts of your outlook data to a new .pst file(s); for example I have exported my contacts to a file I named contacts.pst.

I saw in your other post that you had lost email and accounts, sorry that you did. But I'd never checked that box before doing detect and repair (I had expected to lose my customised settings in Word and had made a copy of normal.dot, but that proved unnecessary, the loss of everything in Outlook was a major surprise to me too).

Unless you had a backup copy of Outlook.pst (from before the detect and repair), or have some or all of your emails on another PC, I don't think that there is a way to get them back. I feel for you..

BTW if you go to

http://office.microsoft.com/officeupdate/downloads.aspx?CategoryID=CD010224911033&CTT=4&Origin=ES790020041033

you might find a few other useful bit and pieces.

Also, of course, use office check for updates at

J,

Thanks for listing all those different ways to back up my email in the future. Now I can make sure I have a back up if I ever need to run detect and repair again.
