If the Java install registered in All Programs or Add/Remove I would uninstall it and reboot. Then run the command (from Start/Run) sfc /scannow(notespace). Then go to the MS update site and install any critical or Java-related 'Suggested' updates. Reboot.
Thanks, but it didn't work...same installation hangup. I have not rebooted since the d/l, but I did get the same error message after removing the Java line in Add/Remove Software & the reboot.
I have emailed Dell Tech Support too...if I get a good result other than reformating, I'll post here.
You can also get FREE SUN JAVA & install even though you have Microsoft V M Java installed.
If you install SUN JAVA it it used instead of VM Java & IE > Advanced tab then shows both & JUN JAVA or VM can be selected.

If you are able to continue to a normal boot after the error message appears, something in your startup is attempting to use VM and it sounds like it is doing so before VM is started. Unless you have downloaded Microsoft Virtual Machine, the
jview command will return an error becase it is looking for Microsoft VM.
Take a look at the items on your startup list (Start|Run, type
msconfig and click OK, then go to Startup tab) and see if there is anything there that invokes Java.
Also, if you can boot normally after the error, go
here and see if you receive an errors related to Java.
Denny, I can boot after clicking OK on the error...in fact that error window pops up just as the last item is loading. BAsically in my startup I have virus protection, and the fax modem load (I use the answer machine). Since I did all the Windows Updates after repairing XP, I have had MSmessenger in startup & even tho I do msconfig & uncheck it, it is checked when I look again. I'd really like to get rid of it forever.
I clicked on the link to your page & the 3 pix in a row above JAVA didn't load. That is what I've seen happen since this error.
To disable MS Messenger use Administrative Tools > Services & scroll to "Messenger" double click & set "Startup type" to Disabled.
If you want to also Stop the current session of Messenger running , right click on "Messenger" & select Stop.

As she wrote the above it only refers to Microsoft Messenger Service as it is listed in msconfig "Services" tab as "Messenger".
Curios. ? What JAVA VM is your Browser now using Microsoft or SUN.?
You can check by using IE , Tools > Internet Options , Advanced tab & scroll to SUN Java & VM Java. If SUN is ticked it is using SUN. You can also check by connecting to site http://javatester.org/version.html & the pink windows shows the version of Java your Browser is using.

Gary, I'm using Java 1.1.4 from MS. I think I can now d/l the Sun Java, but it ain't broke now, you know? I really appreciate your help.
